White House nominates Utahn to IRS board
Hatch suggested Cherecwich for the oversight panel
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, sent a letter more than a year ago to the White House recommending Cherecwich to the assistant to the president for presidential personnel at the White House. Hatch sits on the Senate Finance Committee, which will need to confirm him for the position.
"I have known Paul for many years, and with his impressive tax background, I'm confident he'll do an outstanding job," Hatch said in a statement. "Paul was involved in the board's creation, so he has a strong institutional background and an understanding of the board's role and mission."
Cherecwich was international president of the Tax Executives Institute when Congress passed the IRS Restructuring Reform Act of 1998, which created the board, according to Hatch's office.
The nine-member board is an independent body responsible for overseeing all aspects of the IRS including its administration and management and how it implements internal revenue laws.
The president appoints seven board members, one of which must be a full-time federal employee or a representative of IRS employees. The secretary of treasury and the commissioner of internal revenue are also members of the board. The board meets every other month, holds at least one public meeting each year and publishes an annual report, as well as a separate mid-year report reviewing the progress of the IRS's electronic tax filing efforts.
He testified before Congress in September 1997 as vice president of taxes and tax counsel for Thiokol Corp. in Ogden.
If confirmed, Cherecwich's term would expire Sept. 14, 2009.
