Eagle Mountain seeks plot of land for cemetery
"A cemetery really solidifies a community," Mayor Brian Olsen said. "It's a memorial. There's some sacredness to it."
Olsen and the City Council have asked volunteers to work out a cemetery proposal, hoping to get the land before the price increases as the community grows.
"There are a lot of things that are really critical to plan right from the beginning. This is one of them," Councilwoman Linn Strouse said.
Eagle Mountain has a median age of 21.1, according to U.S. census figures, and the population is growing rapidly. In 2000, the U.S. Census reported there were 2,157 people in Eagle Mountain only nine were over the age of 75. Now, the latest census figures have the population at 10,343 for the city in western Utah County.
"We're having all of these firsts happen so fast," city spokeswoman Linda Peterson said. "We wanted to add a cemetery to add history and authenticity to the city, to give a permanent feeling and let people know we're here to stay."
But it isn't as simple as finding an open piece of land. Cemeteries require water to keep up the grounds. There are a lot of other details to work out, but Olsen said the city should go forward with the plan and give Eagle Mountain residents a permanent place to be remembered.<
