Aviary programs targeting students
The after-school programs are designed for students in grades four through nine and meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is suggested by e-mailing: johnm@tracyaviary.org.
Explore the geology, hydrology, meteorology, biology, energy flow, human history and ecology of 1 square kilometer centered on Tracy Aviary. Through these studies, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills for interpreting their own home environments. A fee may apply.
Sky hunters is a preschool program designed for young children and their parents, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9:30—11 a.m. Pre-registration is suggested by e-mailing johnm@tracyaviary.org.
The Birds of Prey program includes hawks, owls and falcons, which are fascinating predators that through story and lore have captivated people throughout the world for centuries. Experience the wonder of these incredible creatures and experience them up close at Tracy Aviary. Students will dissect owl pellets, explore habitat for birds of prey, practice calls and learn the important roles these sky hunters fill in the world. A fee may apply.
Each possesses a unique variety of plant and animal species, each connected, each a part of our local biological community. Take part in learning about the community and discover what lies beyond your doorstep. (Appropriate both for novices and seasoned naturalists.) A fee may apply. Aviary After Hours meets on Thursdays. Birds, science and culture — the Lessons for Utah lecture series, is held Thursday evenings Nov. 9 and 16 starting at 6 p.m. This event is free to the public. Special activities are held for younger visitors. On Nov. 9, Sarah Bush, will discuss field ornithology in the 21st century, studies from Papua New Guinea. On Nov. 16, Jack Broughton will discuss prehistoric human impacts on California birds and archaeological evidence from San Francisco Bay.
Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It's a great way to get in shape, be with your baby and meet other moms. Taught by certified instructors (who also are moms), this is a great workout for any level of exerciser. Discounts are available for Tracy Aviary members. Wildlife Photography through Dec. 14. Join instructor Doug Sims, Thursdays at 7 p.m. This course will start at an amateur level and teach the fundamentals of photography, such as exposure, lighting and composition. The course then addresses composition and lighting specifically for wildlife photography. Students will learn methods for shooting in the wild and in captivity. The course culminates in a student photo exhibit at the Mill at Tracy Aviary. Course fee is $50 and students need an advanced compact camera or SLR type digital or film camera and tripod.
Are you a shuttberbug? Tracy Aviary offers photographers of all skill levels the opportunity to take award-winning photos of our amazing birds. On Saturday at 1 p.m., we will be highlighting our falcons. See them in their natural character and take home great pictures and memories. Pre-registration and additional fee required.
Veterans Day Celebration, Nov. 11. On Saturday we're celebrating the brave men and women who continually protect our freedom with free admission for veterans, police and EMS personnel. At 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Anami, our bald eagle, will be out and available for photos with those in uniform or to visit with family members. Bring your camera and take home memories.
