Guv's mansion intruder arrested
Just after 3 p.m., the 30-year-old man was visiting the mansion at 603 E. South Temple for a public tour of the three-story home, which is decorated for the holiday season.
The 30-minute tour winds through the main floor, which covers about six rooms and the grand hall. The rest of the home, where the family of Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. is currently living, is off limits to tour participants.
The man left the open house area and entered one of the prohibited areas and hid there, said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Lepley, a member of the governor's security detail.
"He went against the instruction of the guide and against the direction of Utah Highway Patrol officers on duty at the mansion," Lepley said.
The man had to be forcefully removed from the home after he "became combative and belligerent," Lepley said.
A subsequent search of the man's vehicle revealed a 12-gauge shotgun. Lepley said a check of police records indicated the man was a restricted person who is prohibited from possessing any weapon. Lepley said it is unknown whether the man intended to use the gun while at the mansion.
Jarred Michael Cameron was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of disorderly conduct and a weapons violation.
Cameron was sentenced to 10 days in jail in 2004 after entering a plea in abeyance to a speeding charge, according to court documents. He was charged with failure to stop at the command of an officer in connection with the same incident, but that charge was later dismissed. The plea in abeyance was cleared this past October, and he is now allowed to carry a weapon.
Tours of the mansion will continue as scheduled with the usual police escorts. The final tour of the season is scheduled for Thursday from 2-4 p.m.
