PROVO — Utah County officials were happily surprised last week when they approved year-end budget adjustments that only required the transfer of $368,982 from the general fund to break even.

The county had originally thought a transfer of $3.5 million would be necessary, but an unexpected increase in sales-tax revenue covered a majority of the difference.

Sales-tax revenue, as calculated by the county in November, came in at about $21.3 million, above the county's previous estimate for about $17 million.

The budget is adjusted at the end of each year to make sure the county's yearly expenses equal the county's expenditures. As a part of that adjustment, the county approved $270,000 in year-end bonuses for county employees.
