A bill that would allow home-schoolers and private school students to be involved in public school extracurricular activities received a final nod in the Senate Monday despite some lawmakers calling it a "have your cake and eat it too situation."

SB81 would allow those students to participate in clubs, sports and other activities at their neighborhood schools.

Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Lehi, who sponsored the bill, said some districts do well at embracing outside students while others bar those students from participating. The measure would allow them to participate in all districts.

"These parents pay taxes and in many cases these students need that kind of socialization," said Sen. Pat Jones, D-Holladay.

But Sen. Scott McCoy, D-Salt Lake, likened the situation to families getting to have their cake and eat it too.

Madsen said, "I hope we understand that they pay for the cake, and if they want to eat a little piece of the cake then I think they are entitled."
