Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has tapped a longtime state government insider to head his efforts to help small Utah businesses provide health insurance for their employees.

John T. Nielsen will become the executive director of the Utah Health Insurance Exchange, the Governor's Office of Economic Development announced Wednesday.

In addition to positions with the state Department of Public Safety and the Executive and Judicial Compensation Commission, Nielsen recently retired as senior legal counsel and director of government relations for Intermountain Healthcare, the state's largest health system.

The Utah Health Insurance Exchange is designed to act as a clearinghouse where all Utah insurance providers, public and private, can come together and provide accessible and affordable health insurance. Huntsman has declared the initiative, which is envisioned to be self-sustaining after an estimated $1 million in setup costs from the state, as one of his top economic priorities.
