Utah receives tobacco $$
Utah received $210,000 in tobacco money on June 4. The state received $27 million in April as part of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement.
The agreement, which includes 46 states, the District of Columbia and five other U.S. entities, requires large tobacco companies to pay the states to compensate for health problems resulting from smoking.
The companies, including R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and Lorillard, agreed to pay $206 billion over 25 years. Of that, Utah will receive $1 billion over the term of the settlement.
The money received this week is from a late payment from the General Tobacco Company, as well as assets from a bankrupt tobacco company.
