Season's almost done, who's still in the fight?

LARAMIE, Wyo. — The big question in the Mountain West this week concerns energy left and fight to give.

Who exactly has it?

The Utes can continue a remarkable comeback season and set up a dramatic finale against BYU if they dispatch New Mexico as expected today. But how much fight do the Lobos have in them?

The Cougars can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win at Wyoming today. But after the Utes pulled the Cowboy's pants down last week, how much starch do they have left?

Air Force, with a new-found identity, hosts San Diego State. But when the Falcons ambush the Aztecs today, how much will SDSU have in the tank? And can UNLV present itself as more than cardboard cutouts for TCU today in Fort Worth?

Colorado State hosts Georgia Southern and who knows if the Rams have enough pride to protect Hughes Stadium from a 10th loss.

This league is heading down the home stretch right now and the Cougars, Utes and Falcons are clearly in the lead.

If you could assign car models that best describe the league's football teams, what would they be?

Here's a stab at it.

BYU — A retro-fit Pontiac GTO running on slicks.

Story continues below
Air Force — Camero coup with fire decals.

Utah — Hummer, fresh out off a muddy Moab trail.

New Mexico — Toyota Tacoma low rider.

San Diego State — Refurbished panel woody.

TCU — Ferrari with clogged injectors.

Wyoming — Ford F150, missing a tailgate.

UNLV — Nissan Maxima without a battery.

Colorado State — One of those small trucks in Iraq with a red front fender panel.

This week's picks:

TCU 28, UNLV 9: The Frogs haven't had the kind of season many envisioned, but at home, waddling around in a tub of pride, they should have no problem defeating a 2-8 Rebel team whose only league win was over hobbled Utah.

Utah 28, New Mexico 17: The Utes have shifted into another gear and if they can stop Rodney Ferguson and force the pass, they should keep on rolling heading into BYU next week. If Ferguson gains over a hundred, it'll be a ball game.

Colorado State 17, Georgia Southern 14: This one's a tough one because the Rams have struggled big time and their opponent is 7-3. But heading towards the final games of the season, CSU has got to Cowboy up on their home turf ...

Air Force 32, San Diego State 21: The Aztecs have a neat little run going, but if they don't tackle Chad Hall, and there is little evidence they tackle much at all, the Force will deliver ordinance at will.

BYU 32, Wyoming 10: If the Cougars stop Wyoming's run game and force Karsten Sween to beat them with his arm, they'll make short work of the Cowboys, who are reeling from a salty spanking and humiliation at Utah.

Last week 5-0, Overall 46-16 (.741)

I think BYU will stop WYO's running game and I don't think it will…
