High school football: Week 3 preview
Jordan had a big win over the Washington Tigers from Massillon (a suburb of Canton, Ohio), 27-24, in a national tournament in Canton.
The only losses were Northridge's 30-13 setback to nationally ranked Crespi (Calif.) and Enterprise's 40-14 loss to Virgin Valley (Nev.).
There are 10 more games with out-of-state teams this week, highlighted by Davis vs. Kamehameha (Honolulu) at Weber State on Thursday, and Dixie hosting La Costa Canyon from Carlsbad (near San Diego), Calif.
Kamehameha is 2-1 this season, currently ranked as high as fourth in Hawaii and is making its first-ever trip to Utah. The Warriors defeated Kahuku and Kapolei on the islands before embarking on a two-game trip to the mainland where they lost to St. John Bosco, 23-14, in the Louisiana area last Friday.
UNBEATENS: After two weeks, just over one-third (34 of 96) of the teams remain unbeaten. Seven in-state battles pit undefeated teams this week: Alta at Kearns, Grand at South Summit, Hillcrest at Copper Hills, Logan at Sky View, North Sevier at Juab, Pine View at Cottonwood and Timpview at Lone Peak.
Copper Hills has already matched its best-ever start, 2-0, set in 1999 and 2004. Its opponent, Hillcrest, last won two games to open the season in 2003, when the Huskies started 5-0.
After two games, North Sevier has yet to be scored on.
MEANWHILE, LOOKING FOR FIRST WIN: Bingham, which hasn't been 0-2 since 1991, visits Fremont, which hasn't started 0-2 since '97, in this week's feature game between winless teams. Bingham coach Dave Peck is still trying for his 100th win and Fremont's Kory Bosgeiter is going for his 50th.
The five other games between 0-2 teams include Hunter at Brighton, Murray at Taylorsville, North Sanpete at Union, Payson at Spanish Fork and Richfield at Gunnison.
A FEW RIVALRY-GAME NOTES: Bear River and Box Elder meet for the 88th time in their annual battle for the Golden Spike. Box Elder leads the 62-23-2 in a series that's been played every year since 1923. Only East and West have met more times (108) over consecutive seasons.
Payson tangles with Spanish Fork, also for the 88th time. Payson broke a six-game losing streak to the Dons last year and lead the series 43-39-4 in a series dating back to 1917.
