Man facing charges after Salt Lake shooting

After leaving a woman at a hospital with a gunshot wound in her stomach, a Salt Lake man returned to his apartment, threw the gun on top of a carport and tried to hide drugs, according to charges filed Monday.

Corey James Morrison faces felony drug, weapons, theft and obstruction of justice charges, but the 18-year-old has not been charged in the July 3 shooting that left the woman critically injured.

The woman was on a bed in an apartment, near 750 North and 900 West, when she and Morrison started wrestling, according to charges filed Monday in 3rd District Court. Morrison reached for a gun on the mattress and the weapon fired, the bullet lodging close to the woman's spine, according to court records and police reports.

Morrison and another man dropped the injured woman off at a hospital and returned to the apartment, according to the charges. Officers spotted Morrison leaving the apartment for a second time, carrying a backpack, court documents state. Inside the backpack, police found a dozen .45-caliber bullets, cocaine and Ecstasy, according to the charges.

Morrison told officers he had thrown the gun on top of a metal carport. The gun had been stolen and Morrison, who has felony convictions as juvenile, is restricted from having a gun, according to the charges.
