Ingredients

1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup molasses
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup sour milk
1/4 teaspoon vinegar
1/2 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup raisins plumped in boiling water, drained and cooled
3 cups flour

Directions

Glaze:

1/2 cup sugar

1 tablespoon corn syrup

1/4 cup water

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, if desired

Cream shortening, molasses, egg and sugar. Sour milk with vinegar; combine with creamed mixture. Stir in sifted, dry ingredients to make a stiff batter; add raisins. Bake in greased, floured 11-by-17-inch baking sheet at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Do not overbake. Glaze while still warm. Makes about 60 squares.

For glaze, combine water, corn syrup and sugar; bring to a boil and stir until sugar dissolves. Boil 1 minute; set aside to cool 5 minutes. Whisk in powdered sugar until smooth. Brush onto warm cookies.
