Ingredients
1 cup boiling water
1 pound raisins
3/8 cup shortening
3/8 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
4 cups flour, sifted
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups tart apple, grated
2 cups walnuts, broken
1-2 pounds fruit-cake mix
Directions
Pour boiling water over raisins; allow to stand while thoroughly creaming shortening, butter, sugar and eggs. Sift together dry ingredients. Drain raisins; dust with some of the flour mixture.
Stir dry ingredients into batter alternately with grated apple. Fold in walnuts and fruit mix. Pour into greased and brown paper-lined 9-by-5-inch loaf pans. Bake at 300 degrees for 60-80 minutes. Makes 2 large loaves or about 20 servings.
