Reader comments: The Original Kings of Comedy

That was the funniest movie that I have ever seen! I think
that it should have been nominated for a Oscar (but I won't
get into why it was not!).

I thought that the film was hilarious. I gave it three
stars instead of four because you don't have time to get
all of your laughter out. Since it was a movie and not the
actual concert, your laughter was cut short because the
filmakers had to edit for time. I think that it is great
to have four bold African American comedians who do not
feel ashamed nor scared to do their routine. While it may
not be as humorous to some of the "main stream", it allowed
me to laugh like crazy because I could relate.
Thanks "Kings"!

This movie was absolutely funny! You've gotta check it
out! You will not find such honest and everyday humor on
Friends, Sienfeld, or Frasier. I'm glad that a movie was
made to make all cultures laugh!

Unfortunately, this movie has received unfair criticism
from your movie critic. I never heard of a movie that
didn't attempt to reach a target audience! Please be
reasonable with your critiques. I often find that comedies
reach specific audiences quite regularly. Kings of Comedy
does include explicit language, but no different than shows
that appear on TV like the Sopranos. Why is this picture
being perceived as such an explicit movie? Hopefully
everyone will not believe your critique of this movie. All
in all, Kings of Comedy is a hilarious movie that makes you
feel good when you leave!
Thanks!

The review by your critic is an example of the inability of
white America to relate with black America. The cultures
are dramatically different, and the comedy of the "Kings"
quartet is lively and witty. The beauty of comedy is that
it's a forom of expression, and black people historically
have had few outlets to vent their frustrations. Spike
Lee's concert film "The Original Kings of Comedy" serves as
their outlet. And to the critic remember this mantra
"knowledge over ignorance" before reviewing future black
films.
Peace and Love!

How can n-e-one in there right mind give this movie
anything less than six stars! I just got home from this
movie and I can honestly say that my boyfriend and I have
sore throatz, stomachz, and any other muscles we used to
laugh this evening. While I do not agree with the critic,
I respect his opinion on this film. I do say that the
cussing was unneccessary, but other than that, I feel that
in order to truly appreciate this movie you have to have an
open mind and a few throat lonzenges.... :)
DEANNA BURRELL | Aug. 24, 2000
I only gave the film 3 stars because you can only laugh so
long before it is terribly painful. I have been in some
similar situations and laughter is the best medicine. Even
if you are not in the target audince or easely embarrased
you should have a good time.

I give this film a four star rating. Not very often do you
find four talented brothers, who are fine as wealthy, on
the screen together. I thought that what they pulled off
in Charleston will never be forgotten and no could have
done it better. Way to go Steve, Cedric, D.L., and
Bernie!! Keep it up.

People who have a problem with the movie obviously don't
know a good joke when you hear one otherwise they would
have laughed instead of critqued it.

Kings of Comedy is a vulgar, but extremely funny film. All
of the comedians possess great energy and great talent.
Though their humor has a lot to do with racial stereotypes,
it is in no way offensive. Since it's a concert film, you
don't exactly get to see much of Spike Lee's in-your-face
direction, other than some impressive shots of the crowd's
reaction. Sure, the jokes grow a bit weary in certain
spots, but nobody's perfect. It's extremely difficult to
keep an audience laughing consistently for two hours
straight. But I must say, I was laughing 90 % of the
time. Steve Harvey's bit on "Titanic" is priceless. You
just have to see "Kings of Comedy" for yourself. Just
don't bring the kids along--and don't take that warning
lightly, I mean it, DO NOT BRING THE KIDS!!!

How in the world could you not rate this 4 stars. I saw
this movie two times during its first week of release.
Clearly Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer are the high
points of the film. Bernie does do what he tells you he
will do. Say exactly what is on your mind, because you are
afraid to say it. Any critic that reviews this film and
rates it below 3 stars needs to be fired. George Karl has
been doing comedy with language that is equal to this film
and people love him. This is urban comedy and if you don't
like it don't review the film. This movies is right along
the all time favorites of Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior and
Martin Lawrence. If you enjoyed their stand-up films, than
you will love this one. I strongly recommend that the
critic who rated this film 2.5 stars be reassigned to
dramas because he clearly doesn't understand comedy.

I had a chance to see this movie despite the comments of
Jeff Vice. I thought this movie was hilarious and had me
laughing uncontrollably. Jeff did make one comment that
made sense. If you are not a target audience you may feel
uncomfortable with the material. Well Jeff, since you do
not
fit the target audience your review is null and void. Stick
to making reviews that are more in line with your own
audience. Your lack of understanding or of cultural issues
relating to the African American race makes you the least
likely person to submit a review on a movie such as this.
Thats why you this movie was not funny to you at all.

I felt the movie was fantastic. Being a little white
country girl i wasn't lost or uncomfortable during the
movie. I laughed so hard i was crying. In my opinion
everybody don't have the same funny zone so don't just be
superficial dig down and really listen to it. It's great
especially Bernie Mac
RWITHERS | Aug. 21, 2000
Friends, Seinfeld, Cheers never once bothered to find out
if
races different than those of its characters was funny. I
would suggest that the writer try to live outside of his
own
'vanilla' experiences when commenting on artistic
expression. These 4, great comedians aren't trying to
solve
racial stereotype issues or change the world. Let's make
you laugh for 2 hrs and feel that your $7 was well spent.
I love hip-hop, but I have to reasonably educate myself in
order to critique a country music record. Why can't the
writer do the same?

My throat was soar after the movie from laughing so much.
There was a row of older(60 - 70 year old)white women in
the audience and I do not think any of them laughed once.
I agree most of the jokes are racially specific and that is
probably what I admire most about the movie. Trust me when
I say that a lot of white stand up comedians have racailly
specific jokes, but of course most of the white reviewers
would not know that because they do not know a lot about
African American culture, therefore, if it's funny to them,
it's funny to everyone, right? Fortunately for me I am
part of the "target" audience and I thought it was
wonderful. I must say that I was disturbed to see children
(one that looked as young as 6) in the audience.
LATRICE JOHNSON | Aug. 19, 2000
I give this movie 4 stars, due to the fact that it one of
the best comedies I have seen this year. I feel that this
movie tells the experiences of 4 black men and if anyone
feels the target audience is blacks they are wrong. I think
the movie is great no matter what race you are. I give
it "Two thumbs Up!"
S. DAVIS | Aug. 18, 2000
I saw these gentlemen in person and it was so funny that I
got tired of laughing. 37 million dollars say that I am
not
alone in my opinion. This is grown-up humor and is based on
the experience of black men, however, I think anyone can
enjoy a good laugh. Maybe if the black/white destinction
is
left out, you could enjoy it as just a good show.
