Reader comments: Cast Away
| May. 12, 2008
My favorite part was the ending, I thought it was very real life. "Real life" doesn't always work out he way you want it to. Things happen, and life goes on. Sometimes its better to have lost and loved than never to have loved at all.

One thing that I didn't like about this movie is it was
partially boring. I was thoroughly entertained through
most parts. I saw "Castaway" when I was younger so the
whole plane crash/loss of blood thing kind of scared me.
NIDA | Jan. 19, 2006
was worth watching!!!!
HEIDI | Mar. 1, 2002
I liked this film pretty well. I didn't think it had to
show Tom Hanks going to the bathroom, though. At last we
get to see what may have happened to Irene Dunne while she
was stranded on an island for 5 years before she came back
to Cary Grant in "My Favorite Wife." And ditto for Doris
Day in "Move Over, Darling." If Tom Hanks'and Helen Hunt's
characters were married before they shacked up, it may have
resembled those classics a bit more, and maybe, been a bit
more interesting when he came home.

I'd heard comments that it was too long, or like two
separate movies. I personally loved it (but my favorite
book is "Robinson Crusoe"). It's refreshing to see a movie
that doesn't think it has to be non-stop adventure every
second. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the scenes my wife
found a bit long or boring. And I thought the ending was
very good and appropriate. I don't buy many videos but I'd
gladly buy this one.
KEN CONDREY | Jun. 29, 2001
I was very skeptical of this film before I watched it. In
fact I almost didn't watch it at all when the wife brought
it home from the video store. What can I say?! What I
thought was very possibly going to be a dull, mediocre film
at best, turned out to be a clever gem worthy of my
attention. It had all the elements to make for perfect
cinema: humor, drama, enchantment, action. A movie for
anybody. I watched it 5 times before I took it back, and
loved it more the second time around!
HUNTER THOMPSON | Apr. 30, 2001
deeply complaing movie tom hanks gives a great smart and
humors performace.but why did you say there was brief male
nudity when there was only some violence in Castaway
SANDRA | Apr. 30, 2001
Tom Hanks is as hot as ever. But this movie is so stupid. A
brownie scout has better survival sense than Tom Hanks'
character. And there are so many gaps in the film that it
doesn't flow smoothly. There is also the totally
unnecessary
Helen-Hunt-in-a-wet-blouse-without-a-bra scene. Read a book
instead.
RALPH | Apr. 30, 2001
This is one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. While
Tom Hanks is a fine actor, his talent is totally wasted
here. His character never develops. During the times when
we
would have expected to see character development, we get
messages such as 4 YEARS LATER and 4 WEEKS LATER. He
returns home as the same self-centered lout who got on
the plane. And when you get to the end (after 2 1/2 hours),
it doesn't end. Find something better to do with your time.
ANGELA SKUPIN | Mar. 20, 2001
I thought this movie was visually stunning. It had an
emotional and gripping storyline that held me to the end of
the film. If I had any critisism of this film it would be
that we didn't see enough of how Tom Hanks character had
developed and adapted to his surroundings. How did he
suddenly become an efficiant hunter? How long did it take?
KIM | Feb. 20, 2001
The film was excellent and thought provoking. I'm still
mulling over the sybolism and wondering if anyone else has
figured out:
1. Why were the Angel Wings pink on the package that was
sent to the Cowboy in the big city? The wings on
Chuck's package and on the truck were gold.
2. At the beginning, didn't the arches over the lady
welder's house have two names, and at the end of the film
there was one name?
3. Didn't Kelly refer to Chuck Noland as Jack at the end
of the movie?
Hmmmmmm....
JOLI ROA | Feb. 19, 2001
The movie is fantastic because of tom hanks acting. But it
seems very boring when it comes to the middle part of the
movie. well just watch the movie.
CAROL CRAWFORD | Feb. 12, 2001
This movie was slow, it was unusual and it was
not "satisfying" in the usual sense. But I loved it.
Hanks is superb. Look beyond the "devices" and the
undefined ending and put yourself in his place. I was
relieved when there wasn't a lot of dialog from Hanks
to "debrief" his experience. It allowed me to apply my own
meaning and significance to the events that followed his
return. It elicited all those great emotions -- fear,
anger, despair, joy, disappointment, grief, acceptance and
hope -- through the prism of Hanks' excellent
interpretation. Don't miss it.
C.J. GLENN, M.D. | Feb. 7, 2001
this movie had a great deal of symbolism as it adressed one
of the most prevalent social problems of our times: that of
depression or despair. whether the despair has its
foundation in social isolation, separation, substance
abuse,
or any one of a hundred other causes, the victim must reach
down and pull himself back to the living using many of
the coping techniques and character strengths that Hank's
character used. this is a movie that requires some
thoughtprocess and it is interesting to me to see the wide
range of opinion with which people c ome away from the
picture

*WARNING SMALL SPOILER AHEAD*
To survive this film get out before it ends. everything
holds together just fine right up until the end, at which
point the whole thing falls apart. I suggest that you
watch it to the point that he is picked up by the ship and
then get the heck outta the theater to save yourself from
the horrible ending.
HOLLY VAUGHN | Jan. 31, 2001
I give the movie four stars. I loved and enjoyed the
maovievery much. I can understand the movie and the plane
crash better than anyone else because I work at FedEx and I
see packages and planes everyday. The palne crash was the
best part of the movie. I was however upset because Tom
Hanks and Helen Hunt did not get back together. I think Tom
Hanks is a great actor and was one of his best movies and I
have seen them all. After watching this movie I feel that I
could survive on an island. Great movie!

One of the downsides of a movie industry churning out
shallow special-effects movies is that when a truly great
movie like Cast Away comes along, too many people don't
have the brain conditioning to appreciate its thought-
provoking messages. Rather than dismissing it with such
adjectives as "unrealistic," "fake," and "dumb" (see
below), try exploring its deeper meanings. For example, why
did the producers name the movie "Cast Away" rather than
simply "Castaway"? What did the whales represent? What role
did Wilson play in developing the theme of the movie? What
message was the movie's ending attempting to drive home?
Ask these, and a dozen other questions, and you'll discover
this is one of the most remarkable films ever made. If you
fail to see the value of this film's messages in dealing
with unforseen changes in our lives and learning to respond
to those changes appropriately, you simply haven't lived
long enough yet.
Go see the movie again in twenty years...when the "tide" in
your life has washed in a little bit more than MTV.
ANGELA | Jan. 24, 2001
totally awesome but very disturbing at some parts, very
good comedy relief when needed! the nding was a little raw.
MARIA | Jan. 24, 2001
Cast this one away! I was bitterly disappointed with the
lack of cohesion and focus in the storytelling. True to
Hollywood form, the sensationalization and overdramatizing
was blatant and offensive, not to mention the free
advertising for FedEx and Wilson... I couldn't tell if this
was a story of Loss and Contemplation, Struggle for
Survival, Time Measurement and (its) Effect on Humanity,
or
Whether to Wait for a Missing Loved One. It was a
hodge-podge of a lot of potentially excellent themes, none
of which was explored as well as possible.
R PETERSON | Jan. 16, 2001
One of our friends called this movie 'dumb'. For all those
who thought it was dumb, try to develop your intellect and
spirit a little deeper so you can understand and appreciate
things that don't linger at a shallow level---do us all a
favor and go see 'Dude, where's my car?'.
BRAD RANDALL | Jan. 15, 2001
Tom Hanks was awesome! Many people thought the movie was
boring, and I admit it was slow. But how do you make a
movie about ONE man on ONE island ALONE an action
adventure! He's not INdiana Jones! I thought it was a great
movie very worth seeing.
STACEY | Jan. 10, 2001
My family went to see "Cast Away" and were all very
disappointed. Three of us fell asleep and thought that
there wasn't ending to the story.
The only good thing about the entire movie was "Wilson,"
and they didn't have to pay him big bucks to be in the
movie.
HAROLD L. ALCIGAIRE | Jan. 9, 2001
If left to survive on its own merits, this film would have
easily been overlooked by many, had it not been so overly
promoted. One viewing for me is all that was needed to deem
it an inadequate tale of one man's suffering through
isolation and loss. Too much emphasis was evidently placed
on Mr. Hank's inescapable and irrepressable camera charm.
Most of us faced with those same circumstances would have
instantlt lost our minds or sink to a deep silence. Yes,
[silence], and that's what should have been maintained,
except for echoes of his thoughts and a few mindless
ramblings. Try again, somebody new.
DMOYER | Jan. 8, 2001
I thougth the movie was outstanding. Tom Hank's acting was
incredible. The emotions that he express and showed were
so believable it was like we were actually there on the
island with him. His dialogue with the volleyball was so
realistc. I mean at first you know it's just a ball, but
Hanks brings the ball to life and as the story goes on you
really start believing that Wilson is a real. Two things
about the movie disappointed me: 1. It didn't show Chuck
going through a re-adjustment period (I was already hooked
on the movie so another 10 mintues or so showing that
wouldn't of matter) 2. I thought the ending was a little
flat, but overall an outstanding movie,I feel certain that
Mr. Hanks will received another Oscar for this performance.
GEORGE ANDERSON | Jan. 6, 2001
This was the worst movie I have every seen. Honest!! It
was unrealistic, fake, and it had a dumb ending. Infact,
it does't even end. Tom Hanks is left standing in the
middle of the road staring in to a vast empty nothing. I
give this show a turkey. If you want to waste a good two
hours and a good $7 then go to it. I strongly suggest not
going.
A RICHARDS | Jan. 6, 2001
Excellent Movie- Entertaining and Interesting;
Symbolically spiritual, very uplifting.
DENNIS ORGILL | Dec. 29, 2000
Tom Hanks is a great actor. 'Cast Away' is not a great
movie. It is beautifully filmed, but life on the
island quickly becomes tiresome. Just as it gets
interesting, after Tommy gets home, it ends! Duh. It is
basically a very long commercial for FedEx and Wilson
sporting goods. Not recommended unless you have time to
kill and don't mind being dragged about a deserted island.
CANDACE | Dec. 29, 2000
This movie made me reflect on my own life at the end. I
mean, the whole time when he was stranded, I thought to
myself..."I'd surely kill myself by then!" But he endured
to the end and fought back. He survived and man, it made me
think. It was also hilarious. Tom Hanks is indeed one
awesome actor, and this performance was surely one of the
best.
IDAN | Dec. 27, 2000
I thought this movie was fantastic! It really showed how
harsh and cruel life is when you are stranded on an island
with no one to talk to for four years. The volleyball which
he talked to for half the movie reliefed his insanity which
probably was the only thing that kept him alive. It really
teaches you about some very useful survivor skills which
you can use if you wre ever stranded on an island.
Overall, this is a very good movie and you should see it.
KATHRYN RYSER | Dec. 26, 2000
Fascinated at "Chuck's" ingenuity and ability to survive
and
impressed at Hanks' excellent acting, I came away a bit
disappointed that more hadn't been portrayed about our lack
of control of life, what keeps man surviving, how family
can
encorage from afar and the futility of things. A great
opportunity for more thinking was missed.
MERRILL | Dec. 25, 2000
I thought that I was going to hate this movie. I basically
went to see it because my family was going. I am not a fan
of Mr. Hanks in the least...boy was I surprised.
Not only is this movie extremely compelling and moving and
human, but Tom Hanks gives a brilliant performance..the
best that I have ever seen him. The use of minimal
dialogue maximizes the emotion. It's a great film with a
beautiful performance. Mr. Hanks FINALLY did something
worthwhile.
JIM | Dec. 23, 2000
I don't remember ever going to a movie on it's opening
night. Both I and my wife really liked this one. Hanks
does such a great job bringing you on that island. You
really feel the thirst for water. You feel the disgust of
thinking of eating the slime from the fresh sand crab. We
wondered if we could have the desire to survive in that
situation.
