Reader comments: One True Thing

"One True Thing," is an excellent movie in its depiction of the struggle of a daughter to understand her family; most importantly, her mother. I truly believe that Meryl Streep is the most outstanding actress of her generation. Her performance in "Sophie's Choice" haunted me, but her performance in "One True Thing" really hit home for personal reasons. My mother died five years ago after enduring a 20-year battle with cancer (4 different types), and this movie made me relive a terrible time in my mother's life and my own -- one which I would not want to revisit anytime soon. I loved my mother dearly, and I think of her everyday, but this movie made me remember some of the horrible things that cancer can do to someone you love. No other movie has caused such outpouring of emotion concerning my mother's death than Ms. Streep's depiction of Kate in this movie. Everything rung true concerning that horrible disease -- cancer. I started to shiver when Kate's doctor was telling George and Ellen about their discontinuing the chemotherapy and to be careful not to crush the morphine as it could be toxic. I still remember to this day giving my mother those purple morphine tablets, and the tiny white ones when the purple ones failed to relieve the pain the entire amount of time. As Kate's demise is shown on the screen, I remembered in infinite detail my mother's own battle during those last days in fighting that awful battle. The scene where Ellen helps her mother out of the tub nearly killed me! Ms. Streep's performance was excellent in depicting a dying woman with cancer . . . her thinning hair, the whizzing, the weakness, and frailty, and the emotional toll it takes on you, too. The acting was superb, especially from Ms. Streep!
