Reader comments: You've Got Mail

HEIDI | Feb. 28, 2002
The DesNews reviewer failed to mention that 1949's "In the Good Old Summertime" was the first and excellent remake of "The Shop Around the Corner." The musical "In the Good Old Summertime" features Van Johnson and Judy Garland as the main characters and the great Buster Keaton as a supporting scene stealer. With these two films, what do we need "You've Got Mail" for? This modern movie (film is art; movies are not) has the main characters both living in sin and cheating on their shacked up lovers. Not charming. Those who have broken marriages because of internet romances would find this dumb movie painful to watch. The two earlier and superior films have the main characters previously unattached and chaste. With over 100 years of film and movies, we have a huge base of entertainment to choose from. Why limit ourselves to the new stuff being churned out. Most new movies aren't worth a 5 cent admission.

Any movie with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is going to be a winner! They have amazing chemistry. I loved this movie. It is one of my all-time favorites. If you didn't like this movie, I feel bad for you. You're missing out!

What a long 3 I mean 2 hours but then again it did seem like 3 hours to me.Im sorry but Tom Hanks is usally good but he was shallow and boring in this one and Meg Ryan as always stiff as a board in her acting skills I mean these 2 had no apperant chemestriy they this sat there typing and Im tired of these meet cute type of contrived endings that Hollywood put down our throats every year at about this time I for one would love to see a romance film that didn't end with them going off toghter.

This was a nice movie in many ways, but a little slow. The stars & setting were cute, but why so many disfunctional family relationships? Hollywood can't spare us their warped sense of humor, and have to have the father & grandfather as lecherous old men with young children. Why do the main characters have to be living with their boyfriend/girlfriend? Tonight I'm going to rent "The Shop Around the Corner", and see the cute story and the great movie stars without all that.

I thought this movie was great, but I have one thing to say. I think that the Meg Ryan was lucky that the person she was talking to on the internet wasn't a stalker or something. In real life she wouldn't be so lucky. But you're probably wondering why I rated it five stars if I'm saying such bad things. It was an incredibly romantic and funny movie.

JUST WHEN WE DESPAIRED THERE WERE NOT MOVIES THAT DRUG YOU THROUGH SO MUCH CRAP YOU FELT MORE DESPAIR THAN HOPE THAT REAL PEOPLE OF DECENCY COULD BE ENTERTAININGLY PORTRAYED - HERE COMES ONE OF THOSE JEWELS THAT ALLOW YOU TO SAY YOUR KIDS CAN WATCH THIS AND REALLY ENJOY AN EDIFYING SPIRIT.

I just recently saw you've got mail and it is one of the best movies of 1998. tom hanks and meg ryan are back and better than ever in this superb romantic comedy. you've got mail is from the same team who brought you the other superb romantic comedy sleepless in seattle and you've got mail is just as good. nora ephron has directed a very charming and wonderful movie. you've got mail is among the best romantic comedies around i would compare in to when harry met sally, roxanne, and sleepless in seattle. one of the reasons why i tink this film works so well is the on screen chemistry between two of hollywoods best actors tom hanks and meg ryan. they had wonderful chemistry in sleepless and have even more here. i really liked this great romantic comedy. in fact i think that sleepless in seattle and you've got mail would make one hell of a double feature. as i said before you've got mail got four stars and made my best list of 1998. truly a wonderful and charming movie.

The only reson why this movie gets on star is becuase it has to do with the internet. This movie was so grossly cheesie you want to walk out and throw up on someone because there smiling! They get together oh boy! Did we know that? Of course! It dragged and took another 20 minutes of more cheesie I don't know if I like this guy....oh I guess I do. In my final words, "Cheesie"

A very delightful film, in which I laughed, and cried. It was a perfect date. Hanks and Ryan were made for each other. Of course Hanks could play up against anyone and succeed. Do any of you remember him in "Bosom Buddies"??, Who would've thought. I'm ready to see it again and I can't wait to buy the video.

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen! You've gotta go see it! Those of you who say it sucked, I don't see how you could say that. This was a very cute movie!

This is a very good quality show with a unique plot. I love the New York setting and the romanticism of Kathleen Kelly owning her own small children's book store. A must-see for people like me!
MOVIE CRITIC | Jan. 28, 1999
This movie sucked! It was so long and boring! The plot was not even close to being a realistic internet relationship. I can't believe I wasted my time.
DOUG | Jan. 23, 1999
A fun movie that was easy to watch, but is no 'Sleepless in Seattle".
CHRISTINE NELSON | Jan. 18, 1999
One word...CUTE! This is an entertaining, romantic comedy that will make you feel good about life and love. It will keep your interest and satisfy your fairytale hopes and dreams. GO SEE IT!

Is it just me or is the Deseret News web page a total mess? I love it when you look to see whats playing by theatre and find the listings in any random order so they are hard to find and then you choose the Midvalley cinemas for example and get a page which says: The following movies are playing, and the lists nothing! How about when you select a 12 plex and it shows 4 movies playing! Or my personal favorite, keeping a misspelled movie title on for a month next to the corrected spelling. Combine this fiasco of a web page with that twit critic Jeff Vice who is always at odds with the countrys leading critics and it's easy to see why Deseret news is a second rate and falling publication. The local underground papers are catching up and surpassing deseret News in quality if not in content.

I really enjoyed watching this movie with my friends. It was worth the time and money to watch it and I would go again. All of the actors did a wonderful job in portraying the storyline. Wonderful movie!!!!!
PATSY LEE | Jan. 5, 1999
I thought that it was the best movie that I have seen in a long time. It really warmed my heart.
CYNTHIA | Jan. 3, 1999
I enjoyed this film. It's a romantic comedy with some good dialog and intrigue. The stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan do well together. It is not a great movie, but a feel good movie which holds your attention and leaves you with a good feeling. Those who liked Sleepless in Seattle will enjoy this.
SABRA ATKIN | Dec. 30, 1998
I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND SO DID EVERYONE ELSE THAT SAW IT WITH ME!!!!!!
KELLY | Dec. 28, 1998
There are a lot of hopeless romantics out there (such as myself) and I suggest that they all go see this movie. It was every bit as good as I expected it to be and more than worth the $7. I'd pay to see it again. And again. And again. (etc.)
DENNIS ORGILL | Dec. 22, 1998
A complete delight! Don't miss it!
W HOWELL | Dec. 19, 1998
Yeah the movie reviewer has nothing interesting to say. Just a bunch of biased usually unfounded crap to say. I have read all his reviews and they all suck
SOM | Dec. 14, 1998
this is a good movie - very similar to sleepless in seattle - but the best reason to fork out 7 bucks to see this movie is to see meg ryan - she has tremendous charm - and her acting in this film is close to sleepless. hanks is solid and overall the movie is enjoyable and worth shelling out the money for it.

Haven't seen the movie-subject is Jeff Vice I do not understand why other people in other cities are fortunate enough to have a film critic who is in touch with what other people look for in a movie. We in SLC are cursed with Jeff Vice who is so self absorbed and out of touch that he could not call a good movie if the whole academy whispered in his ear. He is inconsistent and biased which should eliminate him immediatly as a critic. It is very sad when you cannot turn to the local paper to get a feel for what a film is about without getting bashed with opinions from someone who should not be allowed to print his dribble. I consider myself fortunate that we have the web nowdays and can look elsewhere for intelligent reviews. Desnews, do yourself a favor and retire Vice and find someone with his finger on the pulse of the public.....or even find someone with a pulse to review the movies.
