Reader comments: Ice Age

After being exposed to great CGI efforts by Pixar and Dreamworks like Toy Story and Shrek, Ice Age comes off as a hugely disappointing film. The characters and situations are sitcom material and I found most of it annoying and shrill especially the character played by John Leguizamo, Sid the Sloth. By the end, I was starting to feel a bit like Ray Romano's Manny the Mammoth. I had had enough of this film and now I just wanted to brush it off my back and forget about it.

The characters in this film should win an award for "most anoying talking creatures in an anamated feature"... I'm glad I only paid fifty cents at the movies8 for this. About halfway through the film I was franticaly hoping that the saber-tooth tiger would just give in and devour Cid the sloth and company. No such luck.

Since no one else has said it I think this movie was very COOL. Sorry.

A very funny film, especially the sequence involving the Dodo Birds. Also watch for the recurring charcter of the squirel. The pacing is excellent: the filmmakers leave you in stitches one moment, then give you a chance to catch your breath before leaving you in stitches again. Both adults and kids will get a kick out of this. My 5-year-old daughter loved it and calls it her favorite film.

My wife and I took our three-year-old daughter to see it and we all loved it! We laughed out loud several times. Sid the sloth was absolutely hillarious! And that "irritating slo-mo gimmick" Jeff Vice refers to was one of the funniest parts of the movie! The entire theatre was roaring with laughter! Lighten up Jeff! This movie was much better than the latest Disney films, and at least as good as Pixar's Monster's Inc. and Toy Story. It's nice to see a film company such as DreamWorks giving Disney a run for their money, because Disney "story quality" has been going downhill in recent years (with duds like Atlantis and Emporer's New Groove) while the amount of objectionable material in their films is on the rise. Keep up the good work DreamWorks! Great movie!

Stunning computer animation -- surprisingly heavy story line. Close your eyes and you'll think it's an "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode where a neighbor's wife dies and leaves a baby to be cared for. There is no joy in this film.

Jeff Vice's review of Ice Age is right on in my opinion. The usual gripe I have with most animated films is poor character development. This is certainly not the case in Ice Age. The characters are all well-developed and likeable. My 4 children (ages 3,5,7 & 11) all enjoyed the movie with the 5 year old liking it the best. Even though it is PG we didn't find it too scary for any of our children.
