Reader comments: Kill Bill, Vol. 1

I wanted to like this movie soooooo much and then when I saw it, I knew that I would not like it but love it, it was one of the best things I have ever seen. I loved the black and white part of the fighting, it truly made the movie stand out from the rest of the stuff that is out right now. The acting is incrdible, every one the people in that movie put out incredible preformences. I loved how Tariteeno had chapters and how he mixed the timeline up. This is easly one of the best movies ever made. And the Ending in nothing sort of incredible.

One of the best action films in recent memory. I wasn't put off by the violence and that was because of its tone. It seemed more campy and theatrical than it did realistic. I loved Uma Thurman and her character The Bride is definitely one of the top 100 movie characters of all time. Tarantino's visual flair and style is astonishing and his choice is music is absolutely perfect. What more can I say, I loved this movie.

Kinda liked it personally, but wasn't offended by the extended, overdone squirting of blood after heads/limbs were lopped off. My wife sure was, though. Something about a hackfest she didn't find enjoyable. She got to pick the next movie.

There was a lot in this film I never expected to see in the cinema. (And no, I'm not talking about blood and severred limbs) I loved the essoteric homages to the great martial arts films of the 60's and 70's. I loved the cinematography, the art and care taken in each shot. Everything seen in this film is completely deliberate. As far as the blood goes, I found it refreshing to finally see realistic kenjutsu on film. It was an initial shock to see that arms were being cut off, etc... but then I thought, isn't it better to show that if you hack someone with a sword, they will actually bleed and die-- than to propogate the G rated lie that you can fight without sustaining serious injury? The excessive spurting of blood, however, actually seemed to tone down the mood violence. It made the film more reminicent to a game of Mortal Kombat than a series of dark homocides in the name of revenge. Lastly, the musical choices were excelent-- very reminicent to the musical scores of films such as "Enter the Dragon" or "The Chinese Connection", and yet, somehow mixed in such a way that it wasn't hoaky. What can I say, I love Asian funk.

Tarentino has a genuine talent for creating striking visual images. Some of the scenes in this film are truly stunning--even mesmerizing. Uma Thurman is a terrific actress and shows it. However, the hokey, stagey fight scenes, and the director's unbridled appetite for blood and gore drop this promising effort from high art to below average martial arts schlock.

Blood doesn?t flow like a river in this movie. It squirts out like a fountain. The fight scenes were real cool. There is some really good dialog, but that is few and far between. Quentin Tarantino likes to fill those empty spots of dialog with finding new meanings for the F word. I think the Anima has the most violent scenes. Uma does a real good job in this movie. The whole concept of what they were doing with the coma patients is of course sick and wrong. This movie ended up being too much for my wife who said I can see the next one by myself. You are definitely not going to feel the Spirit. (Hyrum Christiansion must have been feeling something else, and I don?t think any of us really want to know what he was feeling. It?s bad enough walking on the sticky theater floors without thinking too much about it.)

Nothing good comes from this movie. What one sees is not eye candy, it is a horrific, gory mess. One can't see what is ever happening because there is always blood splattered accross the lens of the camera. I enjoy QT's other movies, but I felt this movie was distasteful to an extreme and QT crossed many boundaries that are completely unnecessary. This movie would have been fantastic if I could have viewed a little more of the incredible fight scenes and less on the mutilated mess on the screen. No one wants, or should I say no one SHOULD want to see such gore and human mutilation that is portrayed here.

WOW, this film is a visual and visceral treat at the movies! It's like a gory kung-fu chop-sock schlock meshed with 70's soundtrack and aesthetics of a grindhouse movie. Definitely on par with QT's previous films. The film may be deliberately slow paced but the dialogue, character development and riveting scenes shine throughout. Production I.G.'s violent animated sequence was weird but interesting. One of the best films this year!

Hooray for Kill Bill! It helped me feel the Holy Ghost. I intend to use this movie as a tool to help bring lost sheep back into the fold of the Good Sheperd.
