Reader comments: Saints and Soldiers

Saints and Soldiers was a very well done WWII movie, particularly when you take into account the budget. The LDS nod is subtle but is present. The acting was passable, again, considering the budget it was very passable. The sets were very believeable and the combat scenes may not stack up with Private Ryan, but they were still well done. An independent film illustrating the courage of allied soldiers in WWII with a very small budget that is better than 90% of what comes out of Hollywood with millions and millions of dollars. Great film and with the stories of heroism and self sacrific are limitless, make another one and help us keep these accounts of courage in memory.

Saints and Soldiers is a truley surprising movie. It is one of the best war films I have seen. There is a lot more to this movie than just war violence, language, and blood. It gives a true message of courage and bravery. Corbin Allred gives an amazing performance, the emotion he puts into his character makes it seem real. Great movie, although it's not recomended for younger children.

This is one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. I have never been involved in real combat or even in the military in any way, but to me this movie illustrates how war literally is hell and it does it in a very emotional and powerful way. I recommend it to all. Even if you do not care for war movies, you should see it at least once, because unfortunately, war is a part of life for many people.

I had to wait for this to come out in DVD. A very moving movie with a great lesson about looking beyond the uniform (or outward appearance). War is, well you know, but that doesn't mean that on a personal level you leave behind your faith and morals. A soldier in a battle has to kill to defend himself and his brothers. But one on one there is a choice and that is what sets the good man apart from the others. This movie showed both of these circumstances and teaches a lesson about doing what is right even in the worst of circumstances. It is also a picture of how difficult it must have been for the saints on both sides who had to take up arms against each other.

A good movie. Not great, but good. Somehow did not develope the characters enough to make you care about their situations and outcomes. Dialogue was vague. Since the plot was from an actual account, it make the movie more interesting. Acting was good. They did what they could with the script. See it. Enjoy it. But don't go thinking that this is Saving Private Ryan, it is not. Mormon movies are improving and this is another step in the right direction.

We saw this movie and loved it. I agree that LDS moviemaking has come a long way with this film that can be seen by everyone. It is great to see a movie that doesn't have to have filthy language just because there are soldiers in it. It paints a picture of what was going on in the hearts and minds of these dedicated men, their struggles with what they had witnessed and what affect it had on them. It portrays what faith can do for you in horrible circumstances and how one man and his personal battle can change the life of another man who has no hope and no faith. I highly recommend it.

This is an excellent movie that is very well written and directed. Good story that takes several twists and turns. I always enjoy unpredictable plots.

I, in truth, gave this movie 3 1/2 stars, but I put three because I never rate a movie 4 stars because I believe no movie is perfect. "Saints and Soldiers" was a fantastic way to show what goes on in the soldier's mind in times of war. (Much like the Thin Red Line did) This film was absolutely one of the greatest independent films and war films ever made! I found it spectacular! Any minor drawbacks in the film were overlooked by me, because the rest of the story was so catching! Fantastic movie! This is probably my 4th favorite war movie of all time! (And I have seen PLENTY) One of the few war movies that has ever made me emotional. Wonderfully well done! Go out and see it! I hope it gets coast to coast!

This movie enacted the scenes we played out as children recounting World War II battles just over. The soldiers depicted looked very much like my Dad when he came home from the war. The story was excellent and was played even handedly; it left me a better man for having seen it. I hope there are more such to come.

I loved this movie. I am very attached to movies about history and war. "We Were Soldiers" is a personal favorite of mine. I loved this movie mostly because it didn't portray what most people call "hollywood war". It didn't sugar coat anything and try to make you like it. It showed it how it was. Also it more appealed to me, because the main character had something in common with me. His Religion. It gave more of an appreciation of what people of my faith, might have gone through during a war such as that one. It helped me gain more knowledge through film. Thank You.

What makes this movie so different from the "LDS genre" is it isn't LDS. It's written in "tip of the iceberg" form. They leave it to the audience to get things, to understand without being told overtly. They deal in universals that everyone of nearly every religion or persuasion can understand. In that way it is very much good literature. Characters are important and although a couple fit some sterotypes, they aren't played that way. Theology is also important, but it is shown rather than told. Only a very clueless person couldn't figure out the name of the faith he follows. But rather than ideology being preached, lives are led, lives are touched, and the Saint in all of us struggles as we confront the Soldier we're forced to play. Very good directing, editing, filming and casting. I haven't been this moved at a film for a long time.
