Reader comments: I, Robot

Good movie but I agree that two scenes should have been eliminated (two shower scenes). The language was also pretty bad. As far as the message of the movie, that was fairly close to Asimov's view with a few differences. A lot of the movie was taken from a single story "Little Lost Robot" in the "I, Robot" book (itself a collection of short stories). Sonny in the book has been manufactured with only a partial first law (he can allow humans to come to harm) and he actually hides among a bunch of similar Nestor model robots. In Asimov's book after a short period of time robot animosity among humans forces USR to manufacture robots strictly for use off world but initially they are employed on Earth. In the book the robots take over the Earth surreptitiously and for basically the same reason outlined in the movie (i.e. the three laws inevitably lead to a zeroeth law where mankind must be protected from itself). Ingeniously in other stories Asimov explains how the robots became masters of Hyperspace and time travel and selected a universe devoid of alien life because that was the safest of all possible universes for man to inhabit (the reality was that publishers of the 50s and 60s wouldn't allow humans to "lose" to aliens and so Asimov had to illustrate all human weaknesses by having humans lose to humans).

Great movie, great fun! Lots of action and good humor from Will Smith...neat special effects. Smarter than I expected, although most of us usually don't go to these kind of movies for cerebral enhancement. Go see it and have fun!

Great movie. I did't figure out the ending until the end. My teen daughters were hiding in there seats almost the whole movie. The fight scenes are great and the robots have a spider like appearance that ads to the tension in the film. The shower scene of Will Smith only shows him from the side. I have seen worse on sponge bob cartoons. I recommend this movie to everyone except film critics.

Great movie! Some slow parts and a shower scene that they could've taken out that would've made the movie better but all-in-all it was a great movie. The special effects were great, especially the robots and how they fight and move, etc. This is a great 3 star popcorn movie. Better than Spiderman 2 in my opinion. Go see it, you'll thank me later for taking my advice. :o)
