Reader comments: Nanny McPhee

Nanny McPhee is one of my favorite movies. Colin Firth is a really good actor, and I can't wait to see him in more movies. I loved the story plot, and it was easy to follow! This movie has just as much magic as any other Harry Potter movie. Watch Nanny Mcphee, it's worth while.

Just saw it. Well, it is not a 3 star movie. Not Mary Poppins. Not a great movie, but OK to take your kids to. Couples can do better, sometimes, or alot worse. It is clean, cute, predictable but not up to the old Disney B movies. We enjoyed it, but there were only a few chuckles, no full on laughs in the whole audience. Could have been done much better. Just didn't jell. I guess I agree with the critic, which is really rare.

I loved this movie! How often do you get to see comedy mixed with family values? There were plenty of lessons to be learned with subtle sub-plots mixed in. I love it when a movie takes me out of my world and entertains me without offending me or my wife. My only dissappointment is Jeff Vice's review. Enjoy the show. It is a refreshing relief from what seems to be popular now-a-days.

From Jeff Vice’s Column (1/27/2006): “Consequently, this charmless comic fantasy is a major disappointment, especially when you consider that Thompson also wrote the script. It's hard to believe ‘Nanny McPhee’ was adapted by the same person who won an Oscar a decade ago for her ‘Sense and Sensibility’ screenplay.” My Response: “Nanny McPhee,” like Kate diCamillo’s book “Because of Winn-Dixie,” is held together less by obvious action and more by the careful weaving of narrative threads, in the form of repetitions, refrains, strong characterizations, etc. (With that said, “Nanny McPhee” also masterfully uses two climaxes: the first comes when Mrs. Quickly says she won’t marry the father, Cedric, and so the family is faced with being split up; the second comes when Mrs. Quickly returns to marry Cedric, as the vile wicked stepmother-to-be. And the pacing is masterful, especially for the young viewers, not to mention the fact that Nanny McPhee isn’t the one that saves the family. The children are capable and work through the problems. This is essential for a children’s story) Of the threads that hold the story together, the cook’s “It will snow in August before ______” (fill in the blank: the kids learn to behave or something else happens) is one of the subtlest. In the end, Cook looks up at the snowy sky that is transforming the wedding from garish color to white and acknowledges, with delight, that it is snowing in August. Aunt Adelaide’s refrain about “no loose vowels” comes into play brilliantly at the end of the film, as well, when the wicked stepmother-to-be, Mrs. Quickly, hisses, “Behave!” at the children as she makes her way down the wedding aisle. Nanny McPhee reminds Simon that the children must do as they’re told, and the baby, in characteristic fashion, illuminates the situation by parroting Mrs. Quickly: “Beehive!” she says. It is the stepmother-to-be’s “loose vowels” — her sloppy pronunciation of the word “behave” — that gives the children permission to act as if bees are swarming the wedding party. This ending is not only brilliant because it brings together several threads — loose vowels, the lessons Nanny McPhee is trying to teach, the baby’s uncanny wisdom, Simon’s cleverness, snow in August, and the wicked stepmother thread — but it also does so in an unusual way: the children cause a food fight and destroy the wedding at the same time that they are mastering the final lesson of doing as they are told. This action means that Nanny McPhee must go, as she has promised: “When you need me and don’t want me, I must stay. When you want me and no longer need me, I will go.” It also means that this story ends, precisely where it should, with a white wedding and a happily ever after. After all, this is a fairy tale where there is no room for anything vile — not loose vowels, not marrying someone that you don’t love for the sake of an allowance, not stinging bees—and there is especially not a place for the vilest of them all, a wicked stepmother. I wish that more screenplays were written with the skill and precision of “Nanny McPhee.”

Don't let Jeff Vice's review of Nanny McPhee keep you from seeing this movie. We almost didn't see it because of his review, but then I thought, "How often do I agree with Mr. Vice?" and took my kids to see it anyway. It is a fun movie and I thought Emma Thompson was wonderful as Nanny McPhee. I can see that it wouldn't appeal to Mr. Vice, but to give it a measly 1 1/2 stars is just ridiculous! My boys all agreed that they would give it 3 1/2 stars. It is fun watching how Nanny McPhee can turn these children around and help heal this family. Go see it with your kids and enjoy!

My children and I really enjoyed the movie. It was nice to see Nanny get the children to use good manners like Thankyou and Please. Just don't seem to see that in Disney movies these days. Anyway, I totally disagree with the critics. Every mother I know, including myself thought the movie was a delight.

I loved it!!! It made me laugh!! It's obviosly based on a childrens story, and that is what made it so fun, it was like sharing a good bed time story with the kids. I say Emma you did it again!!

This was a great movie and I thoroughly enjoyed - obviously the critic has no heart or sense of imagination!

I enjoyed it very much. Very cute. I actually thought it was going to be more about the kids, but it really seems to be about children who are just wanting to be close to their father and each other.
IT WAS WONDERFUL! | Feb. 6, 2006
I loved loved it! They did a wonderful job. I loved how the children showed some respect for Nanny Mcphee in the end and how it all became happy.

I enjoyed this show sure is was a little silly with what the kids did to the nanny but it was heart warming and funny all at the same time. for the first time in a long time it was a movie I could take my kids to see and not worry about what was coming next, and my kids loved it. we all had a good time watching it.
