Reader comments: 10 Things I Hate About You

AMANDA & HEIDI | Jul. 13, 2001
We think this movie is great! It could've done without the sex talk, but it's still pretty good. We enjoyed how Heath started to fall in love with Kat. That's so sweet. We just wish that we were in Kat's place. Heath + Ledger = BABE!

I Thing this movie is beautifull, just as beautifull as Larisa Oleynik (Bianca). "10 Things I Hate About You" shows every problems that us, teens, have to face day after day not only in schhol, but in all our lifes, and gives us solutions to solve that problems, and hope to reach what everyone really wants.... HAPINESS!

Not a bad effort for a low budget, teeny bopper flic. That little brunette that Freddie Prinze jnr try's to chat up is cute.

10 Things I Hate About You certainly had the potential to be a good movie but unfortunately, because of the amount of secondary characters, they sometimes became sidetracked. Joseph Gorden-Levitt(3rd Rock from the Sun) and Heath Ledger (TVs Roar) star in this unoriginal yuppy teen comedy. Joseph as Cameron, is a transfer student who has a problem. On the first day at school he falls in love with Bianca Stratford, the most popular freshman there. The only problem is she isnt allowed to date.......until her older sister Katarina does! No problem, right. Well Biancas sister Kat is a feminist who is more or less against dating. What a crisis, right. Well Cameron fixes that and soon comes up with a crazy scheme that involves a lot of money, a nerdy friend and a stuck up, sex obsessed pretty boy who wants to go out with Bianca too! put all this together and in a paranoid farther who worries too much about his daughters getting pregnant, and what youve got is a sickly-sweet teen comedy. Watch it and Clueless comes to mind.

I think that "Ten things I hate about you" is the best movie in the whole wide world, I watch it everyday, and listen to the soundtract in my car, school, and just about everywhere else that I can. I think that Kat (Julia Stiles) has the coolest attitude and I base my everyday life on her character. She is also a terrific actor and I am dieing to see her new movie with Freddie Prince Jr. Down to You. I wish they would only have a sequal to "Ten things i hate about you". Enjoy the movie, I know you will like it as much as I did!

First things first, Let's talk about the reviews this movie has already seen. It has been getting decidedly mixed reviews between adult and youth audiences. The gen-x and youth crowd seems to love it, while the adult crowd gives it decent, but not sparkling reviews. Here's a news flash: The movie is made for the younger crowd. Think of it as a way to make shakespeare relevant to us. Sure there was music (gasp) Sure there were a few cheesy jokes (oh no) Sure it may be a bit vulgar. Who really cares. This movie should be used as a tool for high school literature teachers. Imagine a class that has to drudge through taming of the shrew for a month. Can you see the morale of this classroom? Now, imagine showing this movie at the beginning of the play . . before they start reading it. And then using the film to segue into the play, explaining the whole way through not how the movie relates to the play, but how the play relates to the movie. This will keep the class interested in shakespeare, because they see the words of Shakespeare in their texts, while thinking of the actions of the cast in the film. Relevant lessons are a wonderful thing. In essence, the students will learn shakespeare, while studying and enjoying a wonderful flik. PS: Julia Stiles . . will you marry me?

I thought it was a great movie. In school, especially in high school, so many people do things just because everybody else is doing it. Only a grown up would say it's a 2 star movie. It was funny and probably the best part was that Heath (Pat in the movie) is such a Hotti!!!
RACHEL LEE | Aug. 24, 1999
I thought that this was a cute movie. It could have done without all the sex talk though. I think that the movie could have stood on it's own without all that.
VICTORIA AND DAVINA AGAIN | Aug. 24, 1999

10 things I hate about you! what can I say? it's the best thing to hit the screens this century. Even the perv factor was worth the money. But to see heath Ledger's smile, that was something else altogether. Kat Stradford is the typical teenage bitch, with an underlying secret about why she acts the way she does. Bianca, her sister is also her complete opposite. She is a sweet, but deep, person who wins the heart of the new kid in town (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and is almost taken advantage of by the one person Kat hates most in the world (Andrew Keagan). But, don't worry, it's not a lovey-dovey chick-flick! Throughout the show Kat and Bianca's dad and many other crazy characters (such as the school counsillor) keep you in absolute histerics, with Regenald's quivering member! If Heath Ledger doesn't win your heart with his good-looks and his smile, as soon as he "sacrifices himself on the alter of dignity" and sings to Kat (unless your a guy, or blind) you will melt. Once they get to the prom however, all hell breaks loose and Bianca let's loose completly humiliating Andrew Keagan's character. Imust admit however that I am gealous of her amazing punching ability. I fell in Love with the whole movie (except Bianca's prom dress - what a night-mare, yuk. I'm sure you'll love it too.

RORY | Jun. 26, 1999
It was great, some language and sexual implications, but the interplay between Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger ( former 'Roar' star)was shockingly good. The script is fantastic, and wonderfully executed. I want to see It again.
SIERRA | Jun. 24, 1999
it was really good and i liked joseph gordon levitt in it he was h o t hot
TOM HALEY | May. 4, 1999
My review is that Chris Hicks is a giant nitwit! Almost every review that I read was utter nonsense. As a prime example, what kind of moron uses the phrase "wickedly funny" to describe Grand Canyon, one of the worst movies of all time?!?! It was the antithesis of funny - I almost cut my own wrists before walking out of the theater halfway through the movie. And, compunding the nonsense, he gave a zero rating to Dumb and Dumber, which was truly hilarious! Get rid of Hicks - even Roger Ebert in his present condition is more talented!!!
BRETT GILLAN | May. 1, 1999

YOU NEED A BRAIN | Apr. 7, 1999
If I had no brain, no social life, no skills at anything, no friends, and was still a virgine I could be a Deseret news "critic" Like Jeff Vice. P.S. The movie Kicks A
KATE | Apr. 4, 1999
Liked it--a very honest and real depiction of high school life. Although the script struggled in places, it was sharp and fresh in others. You'll have a much greater appreciation for it if you've read "Taming of the Shrew."
