Reader comments: Farewell My Concubine

DAVID CAIRNS | Sept. 11, 2002
A top mark for one of the best movies of all time. Do not be put off by foreign language issues. Instead let yourself be carried away with this wonderful story of the lives of two Chinese opera stars, told with style and acted with presence and sensitivity especially the extraordinary performance of Leslie Cheung. The story itself would be enough but better still it is told against a backdrop covering the history and changes of everyday life in China throughout a large part of the twentieth century. Engrossing and unforgettable.
