Best movie ever made
AVI GREEN | Sept. 23, 1999
It was surprisingly well made for a film with jarring violence. Whether or not the story is true, it's still very clever. Keep in mind though, that the violent tone of the film makes it an aquired taste.

Fargo is my favorite movie of all time. It has all of the qualities I look for in a film:Terrific acting (Especially by Frances McDormand), memorable characters, and a unique plot. Though it pretends to be true, it is very realistic and stylish. I applaud the Coen brothers for making a movie like this and creating such a character as Marge Gunderson- a great female character who is both independent and intelligent.

What is to enjoy? Fargo tells the story of an obscene events with cartoon characters. These aren't real people, just one-dimensional jokes. What they do is dance in a horrific plot. It's a story that should be told, but not by the Coens. Marge, the sheriff, is laughed at by the producers. The rich father-in-law is so steriotypical and trite that when he's shot, for the first time one realizes this guy was actually alive. The husband and co-conspirator is without redeeming qualities. The bad guys are Itchy and Scratchy on drugs. The kidnapped wife is a windup doll - put a shower curtain or a hood over her and let her spin out of control. In the end, so what. Who cares if they all get wiped out -- but who gets that suitcase of loot!

fargo is without a doubt the best film of 1996 and i think that the academy should have given it the best picture award but instead they gave it to the english patient. fargo has everything to make it a masterpice movie : great charcters, one of the best screenplays, and superb direction. the cinematography was great too. i liked everything about fargo from the first shot the the last shot. fargo is a very good movie. the best scene in fargo was the woodchipper scene chilling and well written. hats off the everybody who made fargo one of the bes films of all time. fargo truly a film claasic

I checked this out in video because it made the AFI top 100 list. Also, I know the film got the thumbs up from both Ebert and Siskel. If both those guys and Chris Hicks like it, a film is almost always worth watching. The movie was excellent -- entertaining, riveting and memorable. I would love to see a sequel with Marge as the main character, solving another crime. Maybe the movie could be called "Brainerd" this time. And the movie was not based on a true story as advertised. That little tag line made the movie more interesting to watch. Still, it was false advertising. A sequel does not need to be based on a true tale to be entertaining if Marge comes back, maybe hauling her baby around with her as she unravels the next crime with her practical, commonsense approach to life.
