Reader comments: Independence Day

I think this movie is great and would have deserved 4 stars if they had only left out the scene that shows Will Smith's girlfriend at her job doing what she does.. It was enough just knowing what her job was, but they didn't have to show her in action.

I cannot believe that any critic could say something good about "Independence Day" unless the critic had been given a steak dinner or some brib by the films producers. The movie is a comedy. The silly opening scene about the golf balls lets you know this. Will Smith urininates and yells"Who da man?" in this film. The plot is the old cowboys and Indians in spaceships junk for kiddies. Call it a mediocre low-brow comedy, but do not put this anywhere near classic intelligent high quality science fiction for adults. Notice that there was no sequel.

Independance day Is breathtaking, entertaining, and thrilling. I have never been interested in "star wars type movies" before. Independance day has really caught my attention. What can I say? I love Independance day!

I thought the actors in this movie did an exceptionally great job. The enabled me to feel the feelings that they portrayed. The plot was well developed and the ending tied up all loose ends. The writers did a wonderful job at staying on point. This movie was worth the millions of dollars that went into its production.

Let's be fair: This film does have a game cast, and a few good verbal and sight jokes, but that still didn't make it anything special. The film is otherwise just an unexceptional sci-fi flick with a completely predictable plot, and superficial characters. Does Hollywood really need to keep spending a lot of valuble bucks to make ordinarily written movies like these? Oh, sure, I wasn't bored, but I wasn't very impressed either. If this is what Hollywood needs to keep doing, then maybe I'm better off just reading H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Oh well...
