Speedskating
     
     
CALGARY WORLD CUP: Catriona LeMay Doan of Canada set a world record in the women's 500 meters Sunday at a World Cup event in long track speedskating in Calgary, Canada.
      Derek Parra, of San Bernardino, Calif., won a bronze medal in the men's 1,500 at 1 minute, 46.54 seconds.
      LeMay Doan was timed in 37.22 seconds at the Olympic Oval to lower her record of 37.29 set last season; she had tied her 500 record Saturday.
      Toyoki Takeda of Japan won the men's 500 in 34.62, ahead of the Netherlands' Gerard Vanvelde (34.88) and Canada's Jeremy Wotherspoon (34.93).
      American Casey FitzRandolph picked up two medals Saturday with a silver in the men's 500 and a bronze in the 1,000. Jennifer Rodriguez set an American record in the women's 500, seventh at 38.16.
     
Luge
     
     
WORLD CUP: Three-time Olympic champion George Hackl won the luge singles Sunday in another strong outing by Germany.
      The top U.S. finisher at the Koenigssee, Germany, event was Tony Benshoof in seventh place.
      Hackl was timed in 1 minute, 35.931 seconds for the two heats at Koenigssee, the track where he practices. It was the 25th World Cup victory of his career.
      World champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy finished second in 1:36.050. Germany's Karsten Albert was third in 1:36.235.
      Hackl moved into second in the standings with 200 points, along with Austria's Markus Prock. Zoeggler leads with 245 points, but Hackl skipped one event and has won the two he entered.
      On Saturday, Silke Kraushaar led a 1-2-3 sweep by German women and Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch paced Germany in a men's doubles victory.
     
Bobsled
     
     
COMBO SLEDDING: Christian Reich of Switzerland won a combination bobsled race Sunday, an event that combines two-man and four-man races.
      Several top competitors, including Germany's Christoph Langen, dropped out in a dispute with organizers. The bobsled federation was offering $7,740 in prize money and the racers demanded $27,300.
      Reich, with a combined time of 1 minute, 45.13 seconds — 53.08 seconds in the first run and 52.05 seconds in the second — won with 60 points.
      Yevgeni Popov of Russia was second with 57 points, followed by Martin Annen of Switzerland with 54 points.
     
Short-track
     
     
WORLD CUP: South Korean men and women made another powerful showing Sunday in short-track events in World Cup speedskating at Sofia Bulgaria.
      Kim Dong-Sung remained in the lead of the overall World Cup standings. He also tops the standings in all three distances.
      He won the 1,000-meter men's race in 1 minute, 31.118 seconds and finished second in the 3,000 in 4:53.302.
      Teammate Min Ryoung was second in the 1,000 in 1:31.140. South Korean compatriot Lee Seung-Jae was third in 1:31.184.
      The South Koreans, who lead the men's team standings, dominated the 3,000, with Lee finishing first in 4:53.216. He was followed by Kim in 4:53.302 and Italy's Fabio Carta in 4.53.651.
      Among the women, South Korea's Choi Eun-Kyung won the 1,000 and 3,000 in 1:36.539 and 5:31.802.
      Yang (A) Yang of China was second in the 1,000 in 1:36.539, followed by Park Hye-Won of South Korea in 1:36.860.
      Yang (S) Yang of China finished second in the 3,000 in 5:33.170 and Joanna Williams of Britain was third in 5:35.111.
      Canada's team won the 5,000 men's relay in 7:09.980, trailed by Italy with 7:12.352.
      China's women were first in the 3,000 relay, clocking 4:18.874. Canada was runner-up in 4:21.006.
     
Nordic combined
     
     
WORLD CUP: Todd Lodwick posted his third top-five finish of the week, finishing fifth in a sprint event in Strbske Pleso, Slovakia.
      Two-time World Cup champion Samppa Lajunen of Finland won the event over Austria's Felix Gottwald, the defending World Champion. World Cup leader Ronny Ackermann of Germany was third.
      Next up is the annual Ski Town USA World Cup in Steamboat Springs, Colo., Dec. 16-18,.
     
Hockey
     
     
WOMEN'S TOUR: Forward Cammi Granato logged a goal and two assiss as the U.S. women's national team posted a 6-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Sunday night in Warroad, Minn.
      The victory extends Team USA's overall record 10 17-0-0, including a 10-0-0 mark on the Visa Skate to Salt Lake Tour. The Americans face Sweden Tuesday in Massachusetts.
