Dunn gets spot on U.S. snowboard team for '02
Deseret News special
Shannon Dunn will get a chance to win another Olympic snowboarding medal.
Dunn won her second U.S. Grand Prix halfpipe contest at Mammoth Mountain, Calif., in four days, earning a spot on the 2002 Olympic team. Dunn took home a bronze medal at the 1998 Winter Games.
"I'm so happy," the Carnelian Bay, Calif., resident said. "I just had fun out there. It's huge for me to know I'm on the team. Now I can just focus on getting better in training. A lot of time with all the different competitions, you don't have the time to work on specific training. Now, I can."
Although the team won't be announced until late January, Dunn's winning two of the scheduled five qualifying events assures her a spot.
Tricia Byrnes, New Canaan, Conn., and Ross Powers, South Londonderry, Vt., both took big steps toward making the team with third-place finishes Sunday. Powers won a bronze medal at the Nagano Games.
