Kemppel wins 16th national championship

BOZEMAN, Mont. — Four-time Olympic skier Nina Kemppel and Carl Swenson ignored soft snow in 45-degree weather Monday to win skating races on the second day of racing here at the U.S. Cross Country Championships.
Kemppel, the all-time U.S. titleholder from Anchorage, Alaska, won her 16th national crown in the 15-kilometer race, winning in 44 minutes, 47 seconds. Czech Katerina Hanusova, who races for the University of Nevada, was second in 46:01.6, and Wendy Wagner, of Park City, took third at 47:02.3.
In the men's 30K, Swenson took charge on the second lap and went on to his fifth U.S. title in 1:20.28.1. Justin Wadsworth of Bend, Ore., finished second in 1:21.04.0, and Lars Flora of Anchorage, Alaska, who won the national sprint title Saturday, was third with 1:21.14.6.
"I felt I went out conservatively. I thought I was saving something for the last lap, something for the end," Swenson said. "But I wasn't. I was right — there was nothing left."
Racing resumes Wednesday with short-distance, classic technique races — the 5K for women and the 10K for men.
