 Olympians
ELDEST SHEA KILLED: Less than three weeks before his grandson became the family's third-generation member to compete in the Winter Olympics, Jack Shea died Tuesday from injuries in a car accident. At 91, he was America's oldest living Winter Games gold medalist.
Nordic combined
WORLD CUP: Bill Demong, of Vermontville, N.Y., took charge over the final two kilometers of the 15K race Sunday and held off Czech Pavel Churavy to win his first nordic combed World Cup by two seconds at Liberec, Czech Republic.
World Cup leader and defending World Cup champion Felix Gottwald of Austria was third.
Demong was 1.9 seconds ahead of Churavy, while Gottwald was 3.8 seconds back. American Johnny Spillane finished 11th. U.S. team member Todd Lodwick missed the weekend events because of a cold.
Cross country
U.S. TEAM NAMED: Sixteen skiers — one of the largest U.S. teams ever named — have been selected on the basis of international results to compete in the 2002 Salt Lake Games.
Four-time Olympian Nina Kemppel, 31, of Anchorage, Alaska, headlines the women's team, which includes Park City's Wendy Wagner, 28; Aelin Peterson, 26, of Fairbanks, Alaska; Barb Jones of Bozeman, Mont.; Kikkan Randall, 19, Anchorage; Tessa Benoit, 24, South Pomfret, Vt.; Lindsey Weier, 17, St. Paul, Minn; and Kristina Joder, 23, Landgrove, Vt. All but Kemppel are first-time Olympians.
Justin Wadsworth, 33, of Bend, Ore., and John Bauer, 32, Duluth, Minn., are three-time members of the U.S. men's team, while Patrick Weaver, 32, Bend; and Carl Swenson, 31, Boulder, Colo., will be two-time Olympians. Other men's team members include Torin Koos, 21, Leavenworth, Wash.; Kris Freeman, 21, Andover, N.H., Andrew Johnson, 24, Greensboro, Vt.; and Lars Flora, 24, Anchorage.
