Hackl second to Italy's Zoeggeler after two runs of men's luge

Associated Press

PARK CITY, Utah — Armin Zoeggeler of Italy, bidding to dethrone three-time Olympic champion Georg Hackl of Germany, held the top spot Sunday after the first two runs of the men's luge at Utah Olympic Park.
Zoeggeler broke his own track record twice and had a two-run total of 1 minute, 29.067 seconds. His second run was 44.521 seconds.
Hackl was close behind in second with a total of 1:29.108 after coming back on his second run to set yet another track mark. Hackl finished that heat in 44.494 seconds.
Austria's Markus Prock, a 10-time World Cup champion, was third at 129:338, just ahead of Adam Heidt of Northport, N.Y., who was at 1:29.410. The United States has never won a medal in men's singles.
Zoeggeler finished the first run on the 17-turn course in 44.546 seconds. That broke the mark of 44.590 seconds he posted in the Olympic test race a year ago.
Tony Benshoof of White Bear Lake, Minn., was in seventh after a first run of 44.776 seconds but lost control of his sled and slammed a wall on the second to fall out of contention.
