A man recently hired by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to work at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Sunday morning for investigation of DUI.
Jan Vanderoemer, 44, was stopped by a West Valley police officer at 1:45 a.m. near 5400 South and 5100 West for improper lane travel, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug McCleve. The officer called a UHP trooper for backup after he suspected the driver had been drinking.
The trooper performed a field sobriety test that Vanderoemer failed, McCleve said. Vanderoemer, who is from Holland, blew over the legal limit when he took a Breathalyzer test, he said. But officials refused Sunday evening to release his blood-alcohol level.
Vanderoemer was released from jail pending a court appearance.
SLOC President Mitt Romney said Sunday night he was aware of the situation and that appropriate disciplinary action had been taken but declined to comment further. "Obviously driving under the influence is an unacceptable condition for an employee of our organization," was all Romney said.
McCleve said there had been an average number of DUI arrests since Friday 17 by Sunday night.
