Your voice and the Games

The Deseret News has invited readers to share their Games-related comments. Some will be published, as space allows:

  • For years I have subscribed to the Deseret News because they're reporting didn't seem to reflect extremist views. Yet today as I picked up my paper I find three articles on the animal rights protest of the Olympic Rodeo. Three articles on a loud group of no more than an average of 80 people when the Olympic Rodeo next door played each night to more than 2,500 people. Not to mention that two of the Gold Medal Winners were residents of our own state. What a great opportunity missed. I was fortunate enough to borrow a copy of my neighbor's Tribune to get an update on the real event in West Farmington. I guess this was just another case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease. — Scott Bass

  • The Olympics are fantastic! As a native Utahn, I can't begin to say how proud I am of the effort that SLOC and the citizens of Utah have put into these games. Every sponsor should also feel proud of their part in making these Olympics so successful. Our local media to include the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune, KSL Radio and Television are doing a superb job of bringing the spirit of the games to the people.
It's going to be difficult to let go when the Olympics come to an end twelve days from now. I think there should be some kind of thank you celebration held this summer for all of the volunteers and SLOC officials, so we as citizens can all get together for one last hurrah and a very heartfelt thank you! — Todd Glover, Riverton

  • I'm a little disappointed in the DesNews and their coverage of the Olympic Rodeo held in Farmington the last 3 days. In today's paper, you have three pieces about the animal rights protesters, but nothing about the rodeo itself and what happened there. Your competitors, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Standard Examiner, each had an article today about the protesters, but also covered the results of the rodeo, where two Utah boys won gold medals for their performances. And why else wouldn't you cover a three day event to which, over the course of the three days, such notables as Rep. Jim Hansen, Sen. Orrin Hatch, Gov. Mike Leavitt, Mitt Romney, several IOC members, and lots of out of town visitors, came?
You did have a picture, which was great, but you sure seem to be letting the tail wag the dog on this one. — Wilf Sommerkorn, Kaysville
