Reporters notebook
A collection of notebook items from Deseret News reporters:
- The Salt Lake Olympics have a big fan in former U.S. hockey captain Mike Eruzione, who along with his "Miracle on Ice" teammates lit the caldron in opening ceremonies. "I'm convinced," he said while watching the U.S.-Russia game Saturday night, "this is going to go down as the best Winter Olympic Games that there's ever been."
- The Heber Valley has hawked its Old West cowboy image with pride. But an incident last week at Soldier Hollow has at least one official wondering if the Wild West image has gone too far.
A carload of Russian team officials ran a traffic checkpoint on a back road near Midway. The car was soon stopped, the Russians were questioned and then released with a bemused smile.
It seems a security official directing traffic was dressed in a black cowboy hat and long black duster. The Russians told security officials they thought the man in the black hat was a outlaw bent on robbing them.
