Apology sought for gun-pointing
Olympic organizers have requested a letter of apology from three Japanese Olympic team members after they pointed a biathlon rifle at two police officers Monday night in Heber City.
Both officers were outside the High Country Inn about 11 p.m. when they noticed the team members pointing their gun out the window in various directions. At one point the officers said the gun was pointed at them, Salt Lake Organizing Committee spokesman Todd Irwin said.
When the officers entered the team's room to speak with the athletes, the gun was pointed at them again, Irwin said. Irwin did not say how long the rifle was pointed at the officers inside the room.
"It's not clear if they did it on purpose," Irwin said. "It sounds like it was very brief."
After overcoming an initial language barrier, the officers asked the team members to shut their blinds and refrain from pointing the gun outside the window, Irwin said. The team members also showed the officers that the gun was not loaded, Irwin said.
No disciplinary action was taken against the three Japanese team members, but the Salt Lake Organizing Committee asked for the letter of apology acknowledging their carelessness with the rifle and assurances it would not happen again.
