Bomb-defusing team responds to 2 scares
The Olympic Render Safe Team, used for defusing possible bomb situations, responded to two incidents Thursday.
The first was at Fashion Place Mall just after 10:30 a.m. A backpack was discovered in a stall in a women's restroom. The backpack was sitting on the floor, inside a stall that was locked. But the person who discovered it could not find the owner, said Murray Fire spokesman Jesse Valenzuela.
About a quarter of the mall was evacuated as the Render Safety Team, which is made up of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and local bomb squad agents, examined it. The agents eventually detonated the bag inside the stall. After it was rendered safe, agents discovered only batteries and a Bible inside, Valenzuela said.
Shortly after that incident, a bomb-sniffing dog doing a routine check on vehicles entering Park City Mountain Resort made a "hit" on a vehicle. The Render Safe Team was called to go through the vehicle but nothing was found.
