USA vs. Canada: A breakdown

GOALIES
Canada: Ever since Curtis Joseph lost 5-2 to Sweden in Canada's opener, it's been all Martin Brodeur in net. The New Jersey Devils goalie is a noted big-game performer.
USA: It's been Mike Richter of the New York Rangers all through medal-round play for the U.S. He's been stellar throughout, making it an easy call for American coaches.
EDGE: USA
DEFENSE
Canada: Once they got used to international play, Canada's defensemen have been solid, though not spectacular. Strong play from youngster Eric Brewer of the Edmonton Oilers has been a huge unexpected surprise.
USA: With veterans like Gary Suter, Phil Housley and 40-year-old captain Chris Chelios, the American defensemen have shown their wisdom — and, at times, their age.
EDGE: Canada
FORWARDS
Canada: Captain Mario Lemieux's injury woes haven't helped, but only a death certificate should keep him from playing today. The line of Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Paul Kariya has been hottest lately for Canada.
USA: Any country would kill to have the American line of Mike Modano, John LeClair and Brett Hull, which has been simply spectacular throughout these Olympic Games.
EDGE: USA
INTANGIBLES
Canada: The pressure of winning Olympic gold for the first time in 50 years weighs heavily on the Canadians. Wayne Gretzky put the team together, but the Great One — sadly for Canada — isn't playing anymore. Still, Canada is hockey's game. Always has been, always should be.
USA: Having Lake Placid coach Herb Brooks back behind the bench has to help. Playing on home ice can't seem to hurt, either. And memories of a certain 1980 miracle are still strong, though gold came quite a long time ago.
