The best arm in 2009 is Mike Dedrick hands down! 90-94 with his FB a Cutter and Slider that just won't stop. He is athletic as they come. He plays SS and hits when he's not on the mound. The University Of San Diego saw that by locking him up to a 95% ride already. ( By the way they were the #1 recruiting class in the country last year) So if pro ball doesn'y pay him enough he will pitch for a top 10 school in the country! Dedrick struck out 122 guys in 74 innings not bad for a guy whos catcher couldnt even put a glove and half the stuff he threw! Now thats an arm for ya!

soccer editorial? come on...
Bengal Fan | 10:31 a.m. May. 15, 2008
Congratulations Coach Kemp..Another year for Brighton and nothing has changed...and they wonder why they lose all their players to other schools? Maybe because other schools have coaches that set aside their egos and look out for the best interest of their players. Never have I been so disgusted at a coaching staff so full of themselves...with a team full of talent, Coach Kemp and Weston played nine players every inning of every game...next up for Brighton? A young inexperienced team thanks to coaches that never had enough insight or faith in their players to make the necessary changes on the field. Thanks for nothing coaches.
wide open | 10:06 a.m. May. 15, 2008
Good to see the tourney as wide open as it is this year.I hope they dont hand out any coaching awards just yet,Brightons new coaching staff seemed to be in way over their head in both tournament games. The players did mount a tough comeback in the bottom of the seventh, and had a chance to win the game.Unfortunatly for the Bengals not many young players were given an opportunity this year so next year looks like it will be a struggle.By the way my money is on Timpanogis to win it all this year.
Tait | 8:39 a.m. May. 15, 2008
I'm sure is a decent pitcher but his era is mostly against weak teams. Did he pitch against anybody with a winning record ? That being said it will still be tough for anybody to beat the team Hoover has assembled.
Dominating? | 7:10 a.m. May. 15, 2008
No pitcher dominated Region 4.
#3's | 11:47 p.m. May. 14, 2008
Timp will win it all!!!
Sechrest... Who? | 8:42 p.m. May. 14, 2008
Sechrest may have been going into the Bingham, Lone Peak game with no loses and could have been dominating region 4 but is it just me or did Bingham score 8 runs off of Sechrest and won 8-6. So much for the dominating region 4 who everyone has been talking about when a second seed Bingham goes to the Region 4 Champions home field and beat them. My bet for State is the Miners. They have showed that they have the pitching to win close games and have proved that they can beat Riverton. The next game against Timp will be the biggest game of the year for the miners. GO MINERS AND TAKE STATE!
Region 4 | 7:16 p.m. May. 14, 2008
Correct me if I am wrong. Is there only (1) region 4 team left in the winners bracket?? The other (3) teams are from those "weak" regions. What gives.
re. southern utah | 6:49 p.m. May. 14, 2008
quit crying... not once did Rayburn say that there was no good pitching in 4A. he said there isn't a dominant pitcher that is unbeatable. Nyberg is a good pitcher, but no where near the level Robles and Pawelek were on when they were still here
Who Cares!!! | 2:19 p.m. May. 14, 2008
Forgot about No. Utah vs. So. Utah. Which region is better. Snow Canyon may have gotten the shaft, but that is life some years. They knew what they had to do to qualify for state. Let the state playoffs do the talking for themselves. Rankings don't mean a thing now. Good luck to all teams in the playoffs.
A true Warrior | 1:25 p.m. May. 14, 2008
I'm sick of people thinking Snow Canyon is a bunch of whinners it must be one guy that has nothing better to do then say things on a blog! Snow Canyon is not whinning the players and coaches know what they needed to do to get the job done and they didn't do it bottom line so the rest of you need to shut it and stop talking Snow Canyon because the players and the coaches know it didn't get done. Good luck to Dixie and Pineview and yes many SC people were at your games yesterday and they were supporting! A lot of good friends at these 3 high schools some have been playing summer and fall ball together for many years so good luck to everyone that is associated with all 3 schools! No one is whinning except the guy that has time to write this stuff on these blogs!
Brighton Fan | 7:16 a.m. May. 14, 2008
Brighton continues its coaching ways, don't make any changes, when you have several other players on the bench who just might be able to pitch, catch and hit. Keep with the Brighton Way!!!
Good job Coaches.
Good job Coaches.
southern utah | 11:58 p.m. May. 13, 2008
Just read your editorial and blog. You have got to be kidding me that 4A has no good hurlers. Chunner Nyberg has been mentioned all year as the ace of Region 9 in 4A. He is young, talented, and already has a state championship under his belt (as a freshman may I add). It may be hard to beat a team 3 or 4 times but if it is PineView and Dixie in the final and Nyberg is on the mound you just might see a sweep. And about the "whiner nation" why aren't you out supporting your local teams instead of staying home with your tail between your legs whinning to each other and on the blogs?
Sechrest | 11:12 p.m. May. 13, 2008
He hasn't dominated anyone. And I can guarantee you, he has no chance of getting drafted in the first 30 rounds.
ace? | 8:57 p.m. May. 13, 2008
You haven't been watching sechrist from LP if you say there isn't an ace. he has been dogged by the pros for three years. and, there has been pro scouts at several of his games. he is the real deal!!!!!
Justafan | 6:32 p.m. May. 13, 2008
You want an ace??? What about that Tait kid from Cottonwood .70 era in region play, only 1 loss to the #1 team in So Cal, winner of last years state championship game HE'S THE REAL DEAL but whos keeping track
3A | 10:46 a.m. May. 13, 2008
If someone is going to beat Judge, Dedrick has the best opportunity. The only thing is, Judge is deep enough that it really won't matter if that does happen.
Ironically, Judge, the 5th or 6th best team in the state-According to the Des News, has only been beaten by the whiney Snow Canyon Warriors who will start their summer golf recreation a little early. We all feel bad for you. Should you have taken care of business against Dixie and Pine View you would not be in this position.
Idea, just base your place on thier finish; 3rd is the best you can hope for at this point in the game.
Everyone feels bad for you. Of course no one feels as bad as yourself. Petitioning the board to return to 3A? You have been in that classification for years with 4A numbers. What a disgrace.
Have I pushed enough buttons yet. Oh, lets have the 4A state tournament in your backyard!! Home cook'in is always good. It is hard when everything has gone your way for so many years and now the playing field has been levled.
Ah, summer vaccation; lovely!!!

CV will need to score more than 3-4 runs to beat Judge. Judge hits as well as they pitch.
The Anti-SC | 9:33 p.m. May. 12, 2008
Snow Canyon is chuck full of talent...and they took last place in their region. Congratulations. Please forgive the rest of us for not wanting to nominate you for Greatest Team of All Time.
More on Region 9 | 6:11 p.m. May. 12, 2008
First and foremost - the most disappointing issue is the fact that Snow Canyon will stay home for the playoffs - they are chuck full of talent and have a better record than most...they have been ranked in the top ten all year. They just ended up on the tail end of Dixie and Pineview due to the 4A change and the UHSAA system. Maybe they should try a wildcard approach in the future? Secondly, UHSAA also forgot to check Region 9's graduation schedule... if Dixie or Pineview do well, they could miss their graduation. Not acceptable in my opinion.
One more comment, I have to agree on the post above me about Pineview - if their bats are hot watch out - their defense is tough led by the Littlewoods, pitching is their weakest link. Dixie on the other hand has Chunner of course, a solid defense and consistent hitting. The local headline this Saturday also highlighted another pitcher to watch, Mitch Mantle on the mound as he silenced Pineview's bats for the win last Friday.
These next two weeks will be fun to watch.

That 23-1 team just had an article written about them a few days ago. I'm sorry they don't the press that the Utah Jazz get, but I'm not sure it would stop your whining if they did anyway.
Funny Article | 5:40 p.m. May. 12, 2008
Funny how the article stipulates that no hurler has scouts interested in 4A - 2-3A teams do Dedrick from Canyon View and Joe Pond from Judge. Yet no press on either or 3A almost all year. Strong Junior class in 3A as well.
pda | 5:27 p.m. May. 12, 2008
great blog. I like bingham to win it all. Why? Because my son plays for Bingham and I am a real HOMER!!! Other than that I think it's anyones guess!!!
Re: Anonymous | 3:14 p.m. May. 12, 2008
We know that this is supposed to be about 4A and 5A, but since the DNews has shown no interest in printing anything about 3A we have to take our shots where we can, so please bear with us. A team that has gone 23-1 deserves some press, even if it is just from their fans.
Anonymous | 2:24 p.m. May. 12, 2008
Rayburn was only writing about 4A and 5A. The 3A comments are off topic.
A rare year? | 2:02 p.m. May. 12, 2008
"it may be a rare year where a one loss team comes through and wins it" In 3A, the last 2 champs came throught the losers bracket. Dixie came up and beat Judge twice in one day to be crowned champs 2 years ago. Last year Snow Canyon showed Dixie what it was like to lose two games in a row on the last day. Before that, I think Bear River pulled off the same thing 5(?)years ago. Maybe that doesn't happen much in 4A or 5A. but it is not uncommon for the 3A ranks.
Reg 9 | 11:28 a.m. May. 12, 2008
Reg 9 3A has a good match up with Canyon View and Judge coming up. I think Mike Dedrick will find a way to beat Judge with his pitching skills. If CV can score 3-4 runs, they can win this one. Dixie has an Ace in the hole with pitcher Chunner Nyberg. He just finds a way to win. If I had a game that was a must win, Chunner would be my man. Pine View has an awesome defense and some hitters that can take them all the way. If they convince themselves that's what they want to accomplish this year, look out. As for some of the other teams up north, I only know what is reported. I'm sure they have talent also, but there is no clear favorite yet. Should be an exciting next few weeks with all of this playoff action.
