As a major railroad hub for the West, SLC will become an even greater terror risk once we start having nuclear waste transported via Salt Lake to Yucca Mountain. Glad the federal government is on top of this!
Honest Ed | 7:02 a.m. Feb. 1, 2008
What a waste of money. Terrorists don't have to get nuclear waste or blow up planes or airports to get our goat. A nail bomb in a dumpster behind a strip mall in some small out of the way town could inspire nearly as much fear and stupid spending as something more major.
Stuff like this announcement keeps us fearful, and probably shores up lagging repugnican support.

High risk for terror attack? By who? The Baptists?

Hey, Honest Ed, I received some information from Jack Bauer, himself, that the threat from terrorists is real. Better "buckle up!"
Agree | 8:41 a.m. Feb. 1, 2008
You've hit that nail on the head, Ed. This is the expected Republican increase in terror alerts pre-election.
Elite Sec Prog | 9:15 a.m. Feb. 1, 2008
You are correct Ed. It's all a waste of money. 9-11 is so OVER. Let's put it behind us and go back to the way things were before the Bush/Cheney/Rove era. Those so called radical Islamists mean us no harm and we cannot afford another "repugnican" (as you call them, chortle) administration. So people, get off the terror kick and go out and support Hillary or Obama.

Huh? Salt Lake City a terrorist target?

Let's underdtand this. The Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Pedro collectively are responsible for 40% of the trade in the United States. But, the ports do not receive any additional monies for their protection.

But, Salt Lake City, now we're an economic powerhouse! If the entire economy of Utah were integreated into Los Angeles, it would hardly be a bump on the radar. But, L.A. is NOT on the revised list and Salt Lake City is?!?

This list is politically motivated as federal funds are in the queue to be spent. Sounds like the birth of a new entitlement program.

Chicken Little: The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

Homeland Security and GWB: The terrorists are coming, the terrorists are coming.

Hmmmm... they sound a little to similar don't they.
Keep the people in fear and they'll fall in line with what we want them to do. What a bunch of crap!!!

Oh brother. Build a wall! Shut down the interstates! Everyone to their homes and don't answer if someone knocks. In fact, don't even talk to your wife or kids, they could be conspiring against you!

It's too dangerous here, I think I'll head to LA or Chicago, maybe Miami much safer!

If you can thorougly scare 'em -
Ya got 'em!
willie | 11:00 a.m. Feb. 1, 2008
you have nothing to fear but fear itself, and BUSH will give you a daily dose of fear.

This is just another pork barrel spending spree by the Publicans.

I've got my tin foil hat to protect me from the terrorists. I've been wearing it for years, so far, no terrorist attacks.

I don’t think we should cry wolf as of yet with this terrorist threat. Just stay calm. God loves us. I believe Utah is a safe place to be and live.
Safe? | 11:45 a.m. Feb. 1, 2008
The government knew about the possibility (aka threats) of the twin towers et al and didn't act on the information.
The government knew about more recent events and gratefully stopped them.
If SLC is on a list PERHAPS the government knows something the rest of are unaware of... like in the past. This time if we as citizens are aware of potential problems, we might be safe.
To those who believe Utah is a safe place... there is no such thing as a safe place. Terrorism is about making people feel unsafe. If it can happen here (a place where we are trusting and scammed for it) it can happen anywhere.
It isn't about fear if we are aware and open our eyes in an effort to prevent terrorism.

Some cities are "eligible for a competitive counterterrorism grant program?"
Oh, brother! I've heard it all.
With nothing manufactured in the U.S. anymore, our CEO leaders in Washington have not only found ways to make $$$ from the industrial military complex, but are now capitalizing on the terror industry.

As the presidential elections get closer, I'm sure the current administration will once again drag out the Terror Alert Color Charts. I hope so I really miss them.
(S)whoops | 12:13 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
I think that this is a good idea. We need to keep those terrorists from other schools in the MWC from coming in and destroying the home pride on the hill. I blame the terrorists...I have to blame someone.

We need some protection!
Sorry | 12:18 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
I feel that everyone who has commented are going to be the same type of people who complain and wonder why we weren't prepared IF something ever did happen. Who knows really if anything would happen, but at least someone on the hill is thinking of us and taking measures to protect us. The attitude in most comments on any story is poisonous. Always against whatever is being done, no matter what side it comes from. You people are never happy with anything. And "Proud to Serve" do your research, LA is on the list. It amazes me the negativity of all the comments not only on this story but almost every story. If you are so against basically everything, and there is an evil back door reason for almost everything, why read the paper? What have you ever done to make things better in your communities besides spout off pessimistic jargon disguised as the concerns of an informed citizen. I don't think we would be targeted anytime soon, at least I hope not.

Pull out of Iraq (let them run their own country). Negotiate with the other oil countries (yes, even Venezuela), use our superior technology to improve energy sources and voila! No more terrorist attacks.
Hint: these people really aren't interested in cutting our heads off if we don't worship Allah or denounce democracy. Really, they don't. That's just the wacky Bush Doctrine laden with their oil buddies that's come up with that BS.

So the twin towers and ALL the other terrorism, past and present, are because of... what? We weren't "in" Iraq for most of the attempted or successful attacks... so now what is your reasoning? It can't be attributed to Bush; he wasn't in office during or before the Clinton years.
Any other spurious tripe you would like to add?
Anonymous | 1:09 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
Hate to be the one to break this to you anon 1:04, but Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. I thought EVERYBODY knew that by now.
SLC Queen | 1:30 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
The government is adding the cities that could potentially be at risk. Terrorists won't go somewhere that is predictable. I think they will try to target somewhere that will be devastating and that no one saw coming. I think that is why we were added to the list. I am glad to see that we are being watched after... I think that a lot of people posting enjoy conspiracy theories and think that everyone is decieving them in the world....
There is my two sense.
To anon@1:09 | 1:36 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
I was questioning YOUR reasoning that terrorism is “wacky Bush doctrine with their oil buddies…”
I did not imply that Iraq and 9/11 are related you did. Iraq, Bush and oil are not the cause of terrorism. The terrorists REALLY do want and succeed to cause us and others harm. You cannot successfully claim (prove) that Bush and oil are the cause of all terrorism. It is ludicrous.
The threat of terrorism is real. It has been proven.

Sorry, But that was a dorky statement. Gee guy, what planet did fly in from.
An idea. | 1:42 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
Please, if you're going to attack, attack Mitt Romney's Utah headquarters first. We're sick of his empty suit.
Fool-proof control methods | 1:53 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008
The Bush Doctrine has been studying human psychology and behavior and knows only too well there are only two fool-proof ways to control the masses: Guilt or Fear.

Ever since no WMD's were found in Iraq and no Iraqis were involved in 9/11 (they were all Saudis)
we haven't been hearing the usual GUILT-tripping:
"bad Americans!," "troop-haters!," "Jane Fondas!," "Cindy Sheehans!" "traitors!"
So, taking a page from the Karl Rove political handbook - we have the old stand-by: FEAR.
And judging by some of these postings, it's working its magic again (on the usual paranoids only).
The rest have figured the game out and change is in the wind. Thank God.

Wow I thought that all of that stuff that we spent millions on to have the olympics here would still keep them away

There is fear and there is reality. Which one caused the twin towers to crumble?
Some could say your post could incite fear and paranoia. You would have everyone believe that there is a conspiracy by "The Bush Doctrine" to use fear or guilt to "control" everyone. Some would have us believe that this conspiracy has spanned decades and crossed political boundaries.
Ironic isn't it?
Being aware of your surroundings isn’t living in fear. It is living with education and intelligence.

Sounds like they've got you exactly where they want you anonymous 2:38.
I am not tied to being "subject to Kings, Presidents, Rulers and Magistrates," so I question everything. Especially since the Gulf of Tonkin lie that the government conveniently made up to go to war with Vietnam.
It's a character flaw of mine.
