What do you know...Kelvyn Cullimore and mis-trust go hand in hand AGAIN!
Changing the Rules? | 2:25 p.m. Feb. 6, 2008
What a sad commentary when Mayor Cullimore has to "adjust" the law to get what he wants. The school district is in the midst of dividing everything up and now he wants to change to rules? I feel sorry for anyone who serves on the new school district's school board. The mayor has created so many unrealistic expectations. And besides, he'll be the one to run the new school district, not the superintendent or school board.

This bill is not "changing the rules" it is simply to clarify some processes and points that the JSD has insisted upon misunderstanding. The proposal from the west side transition team (at the direction of a 4/3 JSD Board) to leave the east side with 10% of the "assets" and 90% of the debt is indicitive of the reasons clarifying language is necessary.
For the JSD board to vote to put almost $20 into "rennovating" west side schools white east side school is much dire need of repair are alloted a meager $8 million for the same purpose is ridiculous. Once the new district takes over the $16 million of the "rennovation" funds the east pays that the current JSD seems to think is so much sorely needed in new west-side schools will at least have to stay "home"

I have to commend Mayor Cullimore for his courage. These are not easy issues but he is willing to extend himself because he wants what is best for the children and citizens of his community. Thanks Mayor C for your leadership.

This bill is not about tweeking or adjusting. It's about turning the ongoing process and guidelines upside down so that the newly formed school district won't have to abide by the rules set forth when citizens voted to form their own new district.
When citizens vote in favor of something, the legislature shouldn't be able to change the the stipulations of the process that occurs after the vote. This bill (SB71) is being presented as something other than what it is.
The elected officials pushing for this change don't want to abide by their commitment prior to the election. Mayor Cullimore was the prime mover and shaker endorsing the split from the Jordan School District. Now that he's got his way, he wants to penalize all students so that cities and the new district won't have to come up with funds to pay for start-up - AS WAS CLEARLY PART OF THE PACKAGE THAT WAS VOTED UPON.
