Go UTAH Valley!
Division 1 | 10:36 a.m. March 6, 2008
If division one players are your selection criteria, then you missed the boat. Provo has two players that are division 1 players. Collinsworth and Davies both have D1 offers. Not putting members of the 4A state championship team on the all valley team is a joke. Especially when they beat the 5A championship team on their home court.
To D1 | 12:09 p.m. March 6, 2008
Guess you did not read the article very well. Collinsworth made the team and in fact so did Davies. I guess you meant first team. Well yes Lone peak had 3 of the spots. But, really Davies was average. He will be much better next year.

Davies | 4:01 p.m. March 6, 2008
Davies had 27 points in a state game. Who else on the list had that many points? The only people on the 1st team list that are being recruited harder thatn Davies are Hawes and Wilcox. Do the big college recruiters know less than the newspapers? I guess winning a state championship means nothing. Not only is Davies better, but so is Kaufusi.
good player | 6:33 p.m. March 6, 2008
No one said Davies was not a good player. And oh being what 6 ft 7 helps. What did he average during the season? Should we go by one game or the season. Ben Aird has 3 great games then in the final not so good. So keep it in perspective. Good player but no way first. He got the place he deserves.

I know Haws deserves the MVP for leading his team to back to back championships, but 1st team all Utah Valley doesnt do CJ Wilcox justice. He is just as good if not better than Haws. Yeah he doesnt have the rings but if you want to go off the states best raw talent, its got to go to Wilcox of Pleasant Grove.
To Region 4 Fan | 7:50 p.m. March 6, 2008
I completely agree. I'm not a fan of Lone Peak or Pleasant Grove , but I did get to see both of these outstanding players on more than one occasion. Here is how I compare the two...
Wilcox- He is very athletic and is one of the most accurate shooters I've ever seen at the high school level. He finds weaknesses in his opponents defense and attacks them. He's not afraid to drive and go up strong, or drive and dish. He is also not selfish at all. He averages 24 PPG but I also think he has close to 10 assists a game. Overall, I think this kid will make an absolutely amazing player in college. And... this kid looks like chris bosh- dead ringer!
Haws- The smartest player in the state. Hardy ever takes a bad shot or a bad pass. Pretty good speed and ball handling skills. On any night, he can take over the game single handedly. Complete team player, and very accurate.
Wow, both are only juniors

Rings are the reward | 8:29 p.m. March 6, 2008
I guess 4A must be dog meat. Beating Lone Peak. Going undefeated in region. And then winning state. Must all be luck. Or must all be coaching because according to the paper none of the players are deserving of being on the 1st Team.
Right on | 9:39 p.m. March 6, 2008
For Utah Valley recognition, I think this list is right on. Maybe you could interchange a couple of the "best of the rest" for a third teamer or two, but the first two teams and MVP are right on.
Re: Right on | 8:20 a.m. March 7, 2008
Haws is the best player on the Lone Peak Team. There's no way they would have won it with Haws. He's the sole reason why LP won it. CONGRATS!!!!!
Logic | 8:28 a.m. March 7, 2008
Davies played with a stress fracture in his leg most of the year and that hampered his numbers. But if you want to use season logic -- why is Collinsworth not on the first team. He led his team to a state championship. He was the team leading scorer and assist leader. In the words of the article, "He was the best player on the best team in the state." Oh, and he was also the MVP of the state tournament. I guess 4A is only the minor league. And what about Kaufusi? I guess Hamilton and the kid from Spanish are better than him as well.

Re: Right On (Correction) | 8:54 a.m. March 7, 2008
Sole reason? I guess 6'10, 6'8, 6'7 would not have anything to do with Lone Peak winning. If you don't think these guys had a huge impact on Lone Peak winning, you don't know basketball. Haws is good but the sole reason. If you they did not have Haws, you still would have to deal with Funk and Sharp. They would have just crammed it down everyone's throat. A high school with that kind of hieght, even without Haws, would be tough to beat!

Are you saying LP could have won state without Haws?

Davies is still a project; learning the game. He's not D-1 yet. Collinsworth is going to be a D-1 player someday, but he can't take over a game like Haws and Wilcox; and his skills are raw. He does play with confidence.
Provo does well because of its coach, and some huge clutch shooting by their seniors. If you recall, Collinsworth choked in the big game; Parrish shut him down.
I have to smile about the comment that Haws never takes a bad shot. You must not have seen ANY of his games. Haws is great, not because he's smart; but because he is a finisher and a closer. He has a raw determination and will to get to the basket, unlike any other player in recent memory.
The MAN with biggest upside is Wilcox. He is finely tuned and only getting better and better. If Haws had to be a one man show like Wilcox was, there would be no comparison. Wilcox was the best, most valuable player in the state this year. Haws had four other D-1 players to compliment his game and occupy the D; and a point guard dedicated to making him the first option.

Re: Interesting | 12:53 p.m. March 7, 2008
Capable? Yes! Are you saying that LP could not have won it without Haws? You Haws fans don't give anyone else any credit. You ask any coach out there and see if they were coaching against Haws or Lone Peak's SIZE. 90% of them would say their SIZE! You have to remember both Funk and Sharp can score. If you gave them the ball every night, how could you stop them? If you did, you still would have to score on the other end. Haws was important to them winning the state title, but Funk, Sharp, and Hamilton just as important. Haws was not the concern playing against Lone Peak, rebounding and scoring was the problem. Their size alone was a handful!
to about lone peak | 2:06 p.m. March 7, 2008
you take away lone peaks bigs they arent a great team they would be like pg or west jordan lone peaks size won them a state championship
This isn't | 2:35 p.m. March 7, 2008
about bashing Lone Peak, or their state championship team. It is about recognizing these atheletes for what they accomplished. Congrats to all of them, especially the first back-to-back valley MVP Haws.
RE: Get real | 4:10 p.m. March 7, 2008
CJ still shot a poor percentage. Haws shot 58% this year.

If you want to look at shooting percentage, look at where they came from….Haws has more layups than anyone in the state. CJ shots a lot more with defenders in his face and away from the basket.
This is like saying Shaq shoots 60% from the field while Steve Nash shots 42% from the field.
Like those two examples, CJ and Tyler are in very different systems and are very different in playing styles. One, Tyler has a lot of layups and the other one where CJ shots away from the basket. YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE RAW NUMBERS.
If you look at layups/dunks then from the basket, you’ll have a better conversation.

Re: to about lone peak | 2:04 p.m. March 8, 2008
Come on now man. You can say that about anyone. If you take Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen away, the Bulls are just another team. The thing is, they DID have MJ and Scottie. The thing is, Lone Peak DOES have size and they DO have 5 D1 players. And most important, they DID win the state championship. Say all the if's and's and but's you want, but the plain facts are they do have size, athleticism, obviously D1 talent, and back to back state championships.
??? | 2:10 p.m. March 8, 2008
Why did Provo lose to Lehi? Why did Provo get crushed by PG? Most Provo fans will tell you its because "Davies was out! Why do you think?!" But when it comes to beating Lone Peak on a desperation 3 the first game of the season, they will tell you "We beat them fair and square!! Doesn't matter that Funk and Austin were out. Doesn't matter that Haws was on the bench most the 2nd and 3rd quarter!! Fair and square! We are the best!!" Hmm..... Seems a little fishy to me.
to????????? | 4:51 p.m. March 9, 2008
first of all lone peak would slaughter provo if they played again and second davies played against pg he wasnt hurt everyone stop sayin that he played in the game i saw him play the whole game pg just had a great game plan for him and took him out of the game but enough of all this provo is so good pg has killed them the last 3 years by an averge victory over 20 lone peak would kill them if they played again end of story
hmm | 12:39 p.m. March 10, 2008
to everyone that says that haws is the only reason that lone peak won, it doesnt matter. they won, GET OVER IT!
if | 12:47 p.m. April 6, 2008
we're playing the we beat them game, wouldn't lehi be the best team in the state? they beat provo who beat lone peak.
No Payne No Gain | 10:21 a.m. April 11, 2008
The most overlooked player in the state is Kimball Payne. He did his job very well. 10 and 9 Assists per game vs. PG's Wilcox duo.
