I think we as a nation need to do the same thing and cut our speed on the roads to save gas and money. It may take longer to get places but well worth it.

It would also help save gas if trucks were required to have soft sides as well as reducing speed

The truth finally comes out, that these big haulers do pollute in massive amounts. It's time that the national speed limits on all freeways be brought in line with reality of safety, reducing polution, and reducing dependance on oil for gas and diesel fuel. We need reduced interstate speed limits and inner city speed limits if any one really cares about the enviornment and oil dependance. However, this is not likely as reduced dependence means reduced taxes for states relying on these taxes. The bottom line is it's going to take federal action to make states enact reduced speed limits on its freeways. We all have to suck up, states and the people, and do our part if we are serious about lowering pollution and cost of gas. Reducing vehicle speed has a major affect on both counts, pollution and cost, with increased safety on the freeways a side effect. But it also takes some serious enforcement of speed limit laws adding 'hazardous to health and economy' to speed violations with higher fines. With fines doubled for vehicles used in a business, a fine for the driver and a fine for the business owner, afterall, business owners dictates to drivers.

El presidente has to lead. He has to call upon us to conserve. He has to set the tone. And that includes slowing down on the interstates, etc. etc. That would immediately crash the price of gas. It would drive it down as demand falls. Supply increases. It is a downward spiral.
but......... our president bathes in oil and gas. He shampoos in oil wells. That is the problem. gop leadership? what gop leadership? demos? you are lacking too.
so sad that a great nation filled with intelligent and good people is led by such idiots. Such incompetence!!!

I recently bought a Volkswagen turbo diesel because they get about fifty miles to the gallon, but the cost of fuel is wiping me out. I get better milage than I did with my gasoline vehicle. However, the cost is almost the same now.

Everyone listen, do you know that highway/interstate driving makes up a minority of miles driven in northern Utah (2006 UDOT Stat)? While I agree with your suggestion for interstate drivers, slowing down is not the answers. An additional benefit to slowing down is saving lives...
We can never slow down enough to save an economomy that is based on a resource that is finite, costly, and we don't control.
How 'bout getting off oil? It'll require some money put into innovation. It may require a shift in infrastructure. In the long run, it'll save us all a bunch of money and keep our economy from being held hostage by a bunch of countries whose sympathies, if not outright support lie with terrorists.

The president does not lead. That is for sure. What good is he in this crisis?
Does he know? Does he care? Which board of what international oil company will he serve on in the future after he is out of office? ("After all, uh, I , uh, know oil, uh, and gas!!")
so utterly sad that we do not a leader.

Speed does make a difference. My Chrystler 300 gets about 25 MPG normally. Last week going from Ogden to Idaho Falls I got 33 MPG by going only 65 insted of 75. Of course I never made any stops and filled up as soon as I got off the freeway.

Glad to hear this lady is finally slowing down. She should have been driving slower anyway, for the safety of all those on the road around her. There's nothing like nearly being rear-ended by a speeding semi whose driver acts like he's behind the wheel of a Ferrari.

Bob has the right idea. USE THE RAILROADS FOR FREIGHT!
driving a subaru | 6:49 p.m. March 23, 2008
there is a difference of 22 at 85 and 26 or 27 at 75
plus, what a difference in the idiot factor
no tail gating , cutting some one off, stressed about the other drivers
in the early 2000s cars were supposed to be moving to
30 mpg as a whole, due to legislation passed in the 90s but W had it canceled, now he jumps forward and suddenly proposes what was already on the books for 2010 and beyond SLOW DOWN PEOPLE

Do you realize how fast the truckers could bring society to its knees?
Imaging people lined up waiting for the food to come to Harmon's.

Our society will benefit from higher fuel prices. How?
By causing pain in the pocketbook that will make us conserve. When fuel was cheap we squandered it on Hummers, SUVs and excessive speeds. The logic of conservation is most apparent when the pain is most intense.

I have a friend that drives for JB Hunt Owner Operator. He got paid only $300 out of $1,400 check, $1,100 in Fuel Deductions. He wants sell his truck and become a company driver and make more money and let somebody else pay for the fuel. I asked him about Bio-Fuel and he said its not at too many truckstops. The Carbon Footprint of some consumer goods is 1,800 miles for many items in the grocery store. How scary that one day the store shelves could be bare from lack of trucks on the road. The Interstate system needs to rebuilt and Light Rail and High speed coast to coast Trains need to be built. Monorails like in DisneyWorld Epcot Center need to be built. Air travel is too expensive and pollutes too much. When will be in the 21st World?

I drove a semi and hauled apples from Washington state to California. I could even beat air freight because they took so long on the ramp at the departing and arriving airports.
When/ if railroads become more customer sensitive, they will have a huge economic advantage.
I loved being a long haul trucker, but I'm glad I'm retired. The dinosaurs couldn't adapt either.
