The major tragedy for farmworkers has been the lack of union management ability on the part of Chavez, Huerta and the overall early leaders. Failing to deliver on basic labor union services to workers and employers resulted in steady losses of both.
Employers who had no objection to the union concept walked away when the union could not deliver enough workers or properly administer necessary services for workers.
Huerta's personal abilities and skills have been invaluable to the causes and policies she has supported so many years.
She and Chavez have been the major Latino visionaries and inspirational leaders.
Hindsight shows us they would have accomplished much more by simply turning over day to day administration of UFW operations and programs.
