Margot told it truly--the harrowing moments and the deep satisfaction. One of the most enjoyable and interesting parts of being organist is watching members of the congregation during the meeting. It lends a whole new dimension to the experience, and an increased love and empathy for fellow sojourners on this portion of the planet. It's also a fact that organists know when certain members of the congregation enter the chapel by speaking tone,laugh and (unfortunately) volume. One or two people have a noticeable impact on the reverence of all. We can enjoy the fellowship of the saints and still allow the prelude to be a preparation for worship. Remember that next time you enter.

Great article, Margot. I loved it! Your funny anecdotes reminded me of one of my own -- the time I conducted four verses of a three verse song. It's not wise to daydreem while you're leading a hymn!
