I've been stuck before on a plane, twice. The big problem was no access to medication. Airlines could do a lot to make sure things like this don't happen. Hours -- it's ridiculous.

The bathroom problem is simple - just get the passengers to agree on a corner somewhere, hopefully one either in the back. I know you've got plenty of inflight magazines for paper.
