Thanks Steve | 12:30 a.m. March 27, 2008
For your donation and your great career. My favorite memory was the punt return to beat Air Force in Colorado Springs. Best of luck at Carolina in '08.

Go Utes! Steve Smith is the best WR from Utah. Beat that tds.
T-Bone | 12:56 a.m. March 27, 2008
Steve was an amazing college player to watch! Even BYU fans have to recognize how great it is to be able to admit he's from the same conference. It's rare one of the little guys can be the most dominant player on the field with all the amazing athletes in professional football, he's the difference maker every time he steps on the field! Now's he's making a significant difference for those who follow in his footsteps in School. Way to Go Smith!!

Wow! A closet Cougar!
Best WR from Utah | 1:42 a.m. March 27, 2008
Too bad he didn't have a Super Bowl winning QB from BYU throwing to him, maybe then he wouldn't have come up a yard short.
YARD SHORT? | 2:10 a.m. March 27, 2008
Hey idiot, wasnt steve smith that came up a yard short, get a clue!
A yard short? | 4:45 a.m. March 27, 2008
That was Kevin Dyson. Not Steve Smith.

Steve Smith is a class act. Everyone in the NFL knows that with the ball in his hands, everything can come unravelled real quick. What an awesome athlete. Way to give back sir.
Ron | 5:42 a.m. March 27, 2008
Hey this article is about Steve Smith. A great football player doing something rare - Giving back. I can't believe the banter about BYU and Utah.
Dooohh! | 5:57 a.m. March 27, 2008
Hey Best WR from Utah,
Aren't you thinking of Kevin Dyson? St. Louis-Tennesee? Also, does this article have anything to do with the Utah-BYU rivalry...i didnt think so.
(p.s. I am a BYU fan.)

Re: best WR from Utah | 5:58 a.m. March 27, 2008
Smith did not come up a yard short, that was Dyson. If you want to take shots at great Ute players, at least get the player right.
Ummm | 6:18 a.m. March 27, 2008
Kevin Dyson came up a yard short not Steve! SIGH
carter | 7:26 a.m. March 27, 2008
steve smith was a beast, i wished i could have seen the battles that him and andre dyson, both of which obviously are nfl caliber, must have had on the practice field. go utes, best of luck august 30 in the BIG HOUSE
Anonymous | 7:48 a.m. March 27, 2008
Why do they call him an "ex-Ute?" Isn't he an alumnus? Ex suggests he didn't finish, or got kicked out. Even the word "former" would be better than Ex.
This is a class-act athlete and a great human being.
(ps is he Mormon?)

I'm one of the biggest BYU homers that I know...BUT Steve Smith is by far and away the best receiver to come out any college in Utah. He is a great player and seems to be a good person, so for all you Yewt fans that think that all Cougar fans hate anything and everything about you I hope that I've proved you wrong. Smith is a class act.
UTE in UTAH County | 8:39 a.m. March 27, 2008
What a player, what a guy. Thanks, Steve, for being honorable on and off the field. Let's keep this program moving forward!! GO UTES!!
Bruce The Goose | 8:57 a.m. March 27, 2008
Steve Smith.... What a stud! I remember going to Green Bay to watch the packers play and i saw steve smith and he pointed to me because i was wearing a Utes shirt it was tight! Go Steve Smith and The PACKERS!!

Absolutely nothing is better than watching a game where the opposing DB has trash talked about Steve before the game. During anybody's life, I think we all fantasize about how we would get back at somebody who has wronged us, but I don't think I have seen anybody back it up like Steve does. Its always an amazing show when Steve feels like he has been dissed.
WA Cougar Fan | 9:23 a.m. March 27, 2008
I love watching Steve Smith play in the NFL. He is quite a talent--lightening quick. Even as a Cougar fan, I admire his willingness to give back to the Utes. And it makes all of us look better in this conference when players do well at the pro level.
So, to all my fellow Cougar fans, give the rivalry a rest just this once. The Utes and all of us have something to be proud of.

Cougar fan here and I have to admit that I can't think of another WR who played in the MWC or the WAC with the talent of Smith. That kid is as explosive off the line and with the ball in his hands as any NFL reciever today. Good for him for giving back and for representing the U/MWC so well.
Rise and Shout | 9:59 a.m. March 27, 2008
2 years ago he was my fantasy stud WR....30 points every game.
Smith = good guy | 10:04 a.m. March 27, 2008
This guy is a class act and a outstanding player. Thanks for giving good recognition for Utah.
TucsonUte | 10:04 a.m. March 27, 2008
Another Ute giving back to their alma mater....you have got to love it! Hopefully the scholarship will yield another Steve Smith for the Utes. My favorite Smith quote was about the flag bearing U of U yell leader pounding on the BYU fan who had jumped him from the stands. Smith stated "even our cheerleaders are kicking your butt".
Re: TucsonUte | 10:37 a.m. March 27, 2008
Didn't take long for a few trash talking Utes to start up the rivalry talk again. When you've lost to us the last two years, you might want to think about keeping that on the down low...at least until you can beat us again.
We Cougar fans love to watch Steve Smith play and are glad we don't have to play against him anymore.

Congrats to the U and to Smith for his generosity. Being an avid Cougar fan my favorite memory of Smith was getting nailed on a kickoff return at LES. The Utes won the game, however. He was very outspoken, like Curtis Brown, but I think even Cougar fans respected him greatly for his athletic ability. His loyalty to the U and his generosity speaks highly of him. I hope he continues to excel in the pros.

(1) Poor writing or editing. The first time STEVE SMITH is referred to as anything but Smith is towards the end of the article.
If your going to take the time to write the article at least let us know who it's about before we've nearly finished the article.
(2) Why are people writing about BYU v. Utah in these comments. You are all idiots.

Scholarship | 11:30 a.m. March 27, 2008
shouldn't it be more appropriate to disburse that money through a scholarship fund for minority students/disadvantage students ect.
scholarships limits for athletes are set anyways, so you're really not impacting any athletes lives with donationa.
It helps w/ the overall athletic budget, but still seems like could be better used for U of U students who need it.

Don't ever apply for a job as an editor. The very first line in the article contains Steve Smith's full name. Be careful who you call an idiot. Your statement may come back to haunt you.
I am always pleased when an athlete or any alumnus choses to give back for what he received regardless of where he went to school. Steve Smith is a remarkable athlete and unofficial good will ambassador for the U.of U. I always like to see the U.of U. succeed in athletics as well as academics and I always cheer for them except when they play against my alma mater, B.Y.U.

Dear Anonymous,
Go back and read the first two words of the entire story: "Steve Smith..." He is referred to by his full name from the very beginning.

The first sentence states, "Steve Smith did it again." I think that covers who the article is about.
I do not mind the banter back-and-forth about BYU v Utah--it is always fun to keep rivalry juices flowing.
Mendenhall is a great coach--but watch out BY-who? Utah is gonna getcha!!

The first two words of the article are Steve Smith...I don't know what you are reading...
That pretty much tells me right away who it is about...Usually you only use one name after the first time you say the whole name...or use a pronoun...

Re: Scholarship | 11:57 a.m. March 27, 2008
Steve Smith has every right to designate who is to receive the scholarship.
If you want to donate a scholarship for minority/disadvantaged students, step up to the plate and put your money where your mouth is.
Besides, how do you know the money freed-up from this scholarship won't be used to fund a general scholarship?

Steve Smith has been a class act from the first day he set foot on campus. All former Utes are proud of you so keep up the good work.
Ute-Ah | 12:15 p.m. March 27, 2008
For the Cougar fan that said that their favorite moment of Smith was him getting nailed on the kick-off... That hit actually broke a bone in his neck but he still somehow played the last quarter. Then about a week or two later he ended up wearing a crazy looking neck brace and missed our bowl game. He is one of the toughest players I know and has put up insane numbers with some nagging injuries. My mom knew him and asked him to sign an autograph for me one day, but he wrote me a letter and signed it instead. It basically said, no matter what anyone tells you, never give up!.. Class CLASS act! The man has the heart of a lion and a heart of gold! Thank you Steve for everything you have done!
CrimsonUte | 12:29 p.m. March 27, 2008
Thanks, Steve. You're a class act!
Thanks Steve! | 12:33 p.m. March 27, 2008
My favorite memory of Steve was a home game when he was returning a punt and ran into a huge pile of opposing guys, only to lose his shoe and eventually score. Thanks Steve!
Mewtyewt | 1:15 p.m. March 27, 2008
Yes, this was a very classy thing to do. I wish we saw more of this kind of thing.
There is no better way to show one's gratitude than to give back. Other pro athletes would do well to follow Steve's example.

GGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO UTES!!!!!
Kenny | 1:30 p.m. March 27, 2008
Steve Smith is the most exciting player I have ever seen. When he was returning punts at the U everyone in the stadium would stand knowing that something special was about to happen. I still love watching him play in Carolina. Smallest guy on the field but the biggest heart.
Football Fan | 1:36 p.m. March 27, 2008
I think Steve Smith is a very good receiver.
Having not read the previous posts except for the first 2 or three, it was a yewt that brought up the TDS and challenged them to beat that. Poor little picked on step child. Always second best, always second best

I'm a BYU grad and fan, but that Steve is a great example of looking out for humanity when he's been blessed with so much. Too many don't. I am totally impressed that he did. Go Utes! (unless you're playing BYU, that is.)
Scoobie | 2:59 p.m. March 27, 2008
Hey Uteys.....pay no mind to some of my fellow cougar fans. This is a great article and a class act on Steve's part. This is what Sport Stars are supposed to be like. Sure beats the Maurice Clarret's, the Michael Vicks and the Art Schlicter's that pop up once in awhile.
Billy | 3:05 p.m. March 27, 2008
Ahhh, good old Stevon. I will never forget the days when every time he touched the ball you thought he had a chance to take it house. Hopefully another guy like that will come through the pipeline soon for the Utes.
CO Coug | 3:48 p.m. March 27, 2008
By far the best WR to come from the MWC. He is a dominating player in the NFL. Hopefully he has recovered from his injuries and gets a good QB again. Very classy of him to give back to the Ute program.
Fika Tolu Fan | 3:54 p.m. March 27, 2008
Very selfless act! Think about the kids who will receive this scholarship, and the impact that it will have on their lives!
All is not lost, in professional athletics, there are a few athletes that can be considered role models, and Steve Smith has always been one of them.
Certainly this reflects well on the entire football community here in Utah!

Thanks, Steve, for the gift, for your career as a Ute, for your example as a pro. We could use more like you.

Thank you Steve!
Thanks for giving back to the U.
Thanks for all the thrills on the field as a Ute!
Thanks for representing yourself and the Utes so well as an All-Pro football player!
Thanks for turning your life around so others can see it can be done!
Thanks for remembering you are a Ute and remember you will alwasy be one!

I knew Steve personally when he played at the U. I went to practices and watched him and Dyson go at it. A favorite memory of mine is going to practice and talking smack with Steve. He is such a neat guy. I am glad that he gave back to Utah. He made practices easier. Good luck with Carolina, Steve! You truly are a class act.
Good for him | 10:17 p.m. March 27, 2008
That was a really nice thing for him to do, even coming from a BYU fan, and student. But mostly coming from a struggling college student, with classes and finances! Any college student, athlete or not is lucky to have that kind of financial help.
My apologies to the U of U as well for certain BYU fans. I'll admit I'm a true blue cougar fan to the core, but there are even certain fans of ours that I don't care for at times. That was a really great thing for him to do, hats off to him.

Great guy | 2:12 p.m. March 28, 2008
He has come a long way since his days here in Utah, he was a good kid then but he has matured alot. I have watched Utah football since I was 5 years old, (26 years now) And he and Erroll Tucker are 2 of the most exciting players Ive ever seen in college football period, there have been alot of great receivers at utah over the years, but Smith was the best. I noticed Bryan Rowley posted on here, he held all the records until Dyson broke them, he too was phenominal.
