New Rule | 7:22 a.m. March 27, 2008
I know it is a new rule in track and field this year that no state qualifying times can be used if they are wind aided but it is unfortunate that the athletes have to throw away qualifying performances because of bad weather. The new rule was implemented because some inferior athletes were making it to state because of some wind aid. I believe that to be relatively few. On the other hand, there are going to be good athletes left out of state because they missed qualifying by a small margin because the weather is so unpredictable in the spring time.

with all due respect the “wind aided” rule was implemented not only to keep unworthy athletes out, but also to keep worthy athletes performing at high levels for an entire season (this prevents a coach from "resting" top performers at the expense of the sport)in its totality. it is unconscionable to let an athlete get into state on a one time fluke. if they are that good they will find a way to qualify, and lets be honest there are plenty of opportunities to qualify. spring weather is a poor excuse to "dumb down" the field. state is about the best coming together to compete. not almost the best or sort of the best, or only the best with a 10 MPH tail wind but the best over the entire season. the notion that a “worthy” athlete will get cheated so we have to let everyone in is harmful not only to the kids but to the sport.

Dingo, you are absolutely right. I was not saying it was an entirely bad rule. But,I just think it is good to allow some of the pressure to be taken off the athletes. The spring time just does not always allow for good weather. You are right, though, that those kids are going to shine anyway. Most of them will go to state by placing at region even if they never get a qualifying time.
