Need a power forward with emphasis on POWER
Smith | 3:13 a.m. March 28, 2008
BYU should be a final 4 team next year with most of the starters returning and the McDonalds' All Americans that we will be recruiting to Provo.
Nathan | 6:45 a.m. March 28, 2008
I have enjoyed watching the team improve under Rose and was excitred for them to do well this year. Let's not kid around here though... this team played their best basketball at the very beginning of the year.

Unlike a team like Louisville who made great strides during the season and is now hitting a peak, BYU was at their best in that game and against UNC. Yes some young players stepped up throughout the year, and yes they went 18-3 their last 21 but who really did they beat in that stretch?

BYU got beat in the second half in just about every loss by teams who were more athletics and physical than they were. And I think A&M outhustled the Cougs late in the game.

Plaisted was only great when noone knew about him. He needs another year and if he doesn't see that he will end up playing for some "who cares" team in Italy.

Consistent??? | 7:00 a.m. March 28, 2008
whatever. consistently choking. the MWC is NOT a very good conference when it comes right down to it. Conference USA is better. BYU plays in a mediocre conference, choked against all or any good teams but Louisville which is humming along now. Plaisted hopefully will turn his game around into a consistently outstanding performance. it's okay to have a few bad games but to not show up in the playoffs is difficult for cougar fans to swallow. again, there is no team leadership in reality. no "RM" factor that BYU thrives on in football.

Next year.... Another meaningless regular season, another loss in the Mountain West tournament and then another first round loss in the NCAA's. What else in new?
john | 7:12 a.m. March 28, 2008
smith I'm not sure what kool-aid you have been drinking, but there is no way that BYU will be in the final four next year. BYU may not even get past the first round again. Get all the McDonalds' All Americans you want it doesn't seem to have gotten you over the hump of winning the MWC championship nor getting past the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Re: Smith | 7:31 a.m. March 28, 2008
Really? Final 4 eh? Start with winning a first round game.
Craig | 7:51 a.m. March 28, 2008
If only the Cougars had been a little more mediocre, then they could have at least gotten a postseason win in the CBI. In the end it won't matter to Plaisted whether he stays or goes. He is not an NBA caliber player and one more year at BYU won't change that. If he ever plays professionally it will be overseas.
Re: | 7:55 a.m. March 28, 2008
Hey everyone. Can you not recognize sarcasm from Smith? Everyone knows BYU doesn't have McDonald's All Americans coming in. He was joking about that and also about the Final 4.
Stubee | 8:01 a.m. March 28, 2008
Successful teams in the NCAA tournament have guards that can create, find the open man and are not pushed around like we saw at UNLV and Texas A&M.

This has been a problem for BYU for years and there does not appear to be an answer in the near future.
re:john | 8:05 a.m. March 28, 2008
Uh, John, BYU has gotten over the hump of winning the MWC championship, that would be two rings in two years.

Sorry Ute fan, the Cougs are only getting better. Get your trash talk in now, because you will be eating crow.

Personally I would worry about how your team is going to get out of six place and not able to win the CBI fluke tourney.
SoSo | 8:25 a.m. March 28, 2008
"When you get into the NCAA Tournament, you are playing teams that are not used to losing"... How about putting a team and a coach on the floor who can "consistently" play and coach. Next year, not a chance. 3rd place in the league an no NCAA appearance. UNLV and New Mexico will lead the league on the floor and in the Coaching ranks. Oh, are any of the new players for the Zoo related to the head coach? He does like to play his cousins, nephews, and great uncle's 2nd cousin on his mothers side over real athletes.
Adam | 8:40 a.m. March 28, 2008
BYU fans, seroiously, winning the MWC means NOTHING. JUST WIN ONE, JUST ONE, NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME. YOU GUYS ARE LOSERS. EVEN WEBER STATE AND UTAH STATE HAVE DONE THAT WITHIN THE PAST 10 YEARS.
scott | 8:47 a.m. March 28, 2008
Perhaps if Lamont Morgan had not been redshirted, then we might have won the last two games. We need someone who can get to the basket.
and I will remember | 8:48 a.m. March 28, 2008
a BYU team that won every home game, won the conference, made us proud, gave us hope, and then got whacked again in the first round of the NCAA's when rea; basketball began.
Dave | 9:13 a.m. March 28, 2008
I'm a Cougar fan and always will be. You people seem to have very short memories. It wasn't too long ago that BYU wasn't very good. They've come a long way in a seemingly short time. They've been close in their past few NCAA tournament games. They'll get there. Just stay positive. The tournament is very tough to win in, just ask Georgetown. BYU needs to tweak a few things but they'll get there. Don't let the man get you down.
great year | 9:23 a.m. March 28, 2008
I watched Plaisted play four times this year on the road. He was horrible at best. He is not going to the NBA. Miles will be twice the player in a few years. Quicker feet, bigger body and better moves.

BYU doesn't play great defense and that is why they are a one and done team. You have to defend in the tournament. That is why UNLV wins games when they count.
Problem--the Coach...sorry, but | 9:25 a.m. March 28, 2008
When a Coach (Rose) will not yank a player and sit him down (Tavenari) for shooting ten feet past the ark, does not--year in and year out get the team to fight with some heart,

DOES NOT GET THE TEAM READY FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE SEASON (NCAA TOURNEY)

TALKS TO MEDIOCRE PLAYERS (PLAISTED)ABOUT GOING INTO THE NBA...

THEN WE HAVE A COACH, THOUGH VERY GOOD, BUT WITH NO VISION. I LIKE ROSE, BUT THINK HE HAS A LONG WAY TO GO TO GET BYU BASKETBALL ANY REAL RESPECT OUTSIDE THE MWC!
Herm F | 9:39 a.m. March 28, 2008
Stick it to the man! People who are nerdy enough, (most BYU haters) or bored at work enough (me and others), have to think about the amazing accomplishments of BYU Basketball and realize that we will be even BETTER next year than this year. And this year wasn't too bad! It was great! With the momentum of 2 consecutive championships we will go for 3, try to lose less than 2 MWC games and win all of our non-conference games if we really want to make some noise!
Final Four | 10:26 a.m. March 28, 2008
Nothing less than a Final Four next year would be a failure for our boys. 1981 will finally be put in the past.
All on Plaisted | 10:50 a.m. March 28, 2008
If Plaisted returns we have a shot at 30 wins and breaking through with a win or two in the tourney. If he goes pro (likely overseas) we rebuild a bit and 20-22 wins would be a nice season.

I think we will see Morgan start at PG with Fredette at SG.

I'm afraid there may be a real chance Plaisted leaves. If he has his degree and can make over 300k overseas for the next 5-6 years I'm not sure why he would stay. Another season next year like this season will probably put him in the same place he is now - a great athlete with a limited offense and poor from the line - good for overseas but too limited for the NBA.
Re: Dave | 10:51 a.m. March 28, 2008
Dave, I just asked Georgetown and they reminded me that they went to the final four last year... Nice try though!!!
Please! | 11:01 a.m. March 28, 2008
Give BYU a break. They should have won a NCAA game, sure. Let's see your team play twice against defending national champions, then play two teams who then should have defeated the #1 seed. BYU has played tough, tough teams. At least they weren't blown out. Not everyone can play the Kent State's of the nation.
Cougs Forever!!! | 11:32 a.m. March 28, 2008
BOLD PREDICTION: BYU NOT ONLY MAKES IT TO THE FINAL FOUR NEXT YEAR, BUT THEY WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!! We would have won it all this year, except that the MWC tournament was played on UNLV's home court. Yes, I know UNLV was by far the better team--better coached, better athletes, and better fans. BUT BYU IS GOD'S ORDAINED SCHOOL AND SHOULD HAVE WON IT ALL, BUT WAS THWARTED BY EVIL DOERS!!! I will sing the praises of my Cougs forever!!
Bryan | 11:35 a.m. March 28, 2008
Once again the BYU haters are out in force, even the so called BYU fans. Oh I know you are realists. Why don't you root for Utah. Then you would have something to complain about. And you Utah fans, try saying something positive about your team instead of always tearing down the Cougars.
CALBLUE | 11:36 a.m. March 28, 2008
Final Four, you have to be kidding. So any team that is good, like KU, Duke, UCLA or even a Texas A.M. who does not make it to the Final Four is a failure. You need to take your medication, a school like BYU may get to the final four but that is asking a lot. Their recruiting base is not the same as UCLA, there are real standards that students have to follow and some of the more gifted players can not or don't want to meet those. If the Cougs can get to a Sweet 16 I think we should all be very pleased.
Whitney | 12:05 p.m. March 28, 2008
BYU fans should really charish the last two MWC championships because i see a major shift the next few years. UNLV will emerge as the dominate team in the regular season, already the dominate team in the post season, 2 MWC tourny Championships, a sweet 16 and second berth in the NCAAs. UNLV returns most of their players, including Wink Adams who played really well in the MWC tourny and in NCAAs, 25 poinst against Kansas. Plus they bring in a ton of extremly talented player. Add that with Kruger's coaching and the defense they play and they are the favorities to win the MWC next year and from here on out. New Mexico will improve so will Utah. And if this is one of BYUs best years ever then i don't ever see them going to even the sweet 16 let alone a final 4. Sorry coug fans but your short run of MWC success is over
Anonymous | 12:08 p.m. March 28, 2008
Crowton still has more MWC conference championships than Whittingham and Boylen combined.
gary | 12:38 p.m. March 28, 2008
at tournament time, the team with the point guard that plays the best usually ends up winning the tournament.....until BYU has such a top quality point guard, early exits are to be expected. And of course as the gentleman said above "until Coach Rose sits JT fast", one cannot expect the team to win at tournament time. Yes he scores against weak teams but how many times did he help against quality teams..none!!
Zoobies | 3:18 p.m. March 28, 2008
BYU couldnt win an NCAA game to save their lives. Lucky for the Mountain West UNLV won the tourney and won a game for us in the post season.
How did that fight with the UNLV fans end up anyways?
Hope | 3:22 p.m. March 28, 2008
All you cougs fan can do is hope in two years Lone Peak star Tyler Haws signs with BYU that would be the best thing to ever happen to your program
Anonymous | 3:24 p.m. March 28, 2008
LOL on the Crowton comment
BlueCoug | 3:43 p.m. March 28, 2008
Thank you team and coach for a great year!

As a fan, it's exciting to have our fans and team "disappointed" with back-to-back conference championships. Coach Rose, like Coach Mendenhall, is building a program, not just a team.

I'm looking forward to even greater success next season!
Columbia River | 3:55 p.m. March 28, 2008
Doesn't BYU have to play Utah State again next year? Well, there's a loss. And don't be surpised with Tavernari suddenly decides to return to Brazil and turn pro, about the time NCAA investigators conclude their probe into his illegal living arranges in Vegas while going to high school.....
The Talent Base | 4:01 p.m. March 28, 2008
It's actually pretty amazing to think the Y puts together a team that regularly competes for or wins the MWC when 98% of their potential players are LDS. Basketball is a game that relies more on pure athleticism than football and year after year the BYU LDS all-star team is one of the MWC best. Given the incredibly hard recruiting environment at the Y, we should be praising these kids for 27 wins rather than complaining about their failures.
RE: Adam | 4:36 p.m. March 28, 2008
Yeah, and Weber State has a lot of returning players from their team that won in the NCAA tournament 9 years ago. And the Aggies had a convincing victory just 7 years ago. Your right, The NCAA tournament is the only measure of success in college basketball, you know it doesn't get much fairer than a single elimination tourney to demonstrate superior programs, that's why the NBA playoffs are single elimination too. The University of Utah is the best team in the state because they had NCAA tournament success 4 years ago. That's why they wasted all the instate teams the past few years. Do you remember what they did to SUU at home last year? And do you remember how Majerus used to demolish Roger Reid in the hot dog eating contests? The Utes prove themselves dominate year in and year out.
Utes in final 4! | 7:37 p.m. March 28, 2008
No way will byu be in the Final 4 next year!!! It's gonna be US not THEM. We are the best team in the conference as PROVEN by our great post season win in the prestigious CBI tourney! And...we have Jim "the Screamin' Demon" Boylen as our coach, so take that all you mean cougar fans!!!
Poor Ute Fans | 8:29 p.m. March 28, 2008
Quit beating yourselves up.

The only serious coach in the State has been Majerus, and you drove him out.

Since Vranes and Chambers / Miller and Doleac, you have nothing.

Football, Urban had everyone buy sweatshirts, other than that, great athletes, (NFL prospects) but no coach.

Lavell, Bronco, Rose and great athletes will keep Utah out of the winners circle for year to come.

But Cheer Up Everyone, theres a cool blog about new under-armour uniforms to talk about.
Seattle | 8:43 p.m. March 28, 2008
I agree with Talent Base above.

It is surprising how many BYU fans take success for granted. I know they would like BYU to do better but winning the MWC championship two years in a row is a big thing. BYU needs to get better but dont start thinking they are going to win championships every year. They simply arent a dominating team/program.

Competing with UNLV and New Mexico for the championship is high praise. If they dont win, maybe they can duplicate what UNLV has done the last two years by winning the MWC tournament. Would fans be happy then or would they complain?

Enjoy the success that BYU has had and hope that it will continue.
Utah's in the final four | 10:45 p.m. March 28, 2008
I think it the next logical step after winning the first game of the BCI.
Flip Flop | 2:10 p.m. March 29, 2008
I thought this years team was the best that BYU has ever had, now its next years? Same ole story.
