Romney would be a perfect solution to balance out the GOP ticket, I would have rather had Romney be the nominee, but hey.
Dutchman | 3:22 p.m. March 28, 2008
I'm with you Sen. Bennett. Get Romney on the ticket. Someone like Huckabee will not bring anything to the ticket that McCain does not already bring himself. Condi Rice has too much baggage from 911 and the Iraq war. Arnold S. cannot run because of the Constitution and Rudy G. is too liberal and now wants to be governor of New York. Romney is the man.

How about Ron Paul for a running mate? He's the man that has spent his career serving the people of the United States and defending the Constitution. He's never voted to raise taxes and doesn't play the foolish political games that will ruin American!

Amen!!!

Romney would be a great man for the job, unfortunately there are so many people who belong to hate churches who have been taught (and continue to teach) falsehoods about the LDS church, that having Romney on the ticket might actually alienate that ultra conservative base McCain would hope to be reaching with Romney as a running mate.

Exactly, Absolutley, Correct, Right On!

Good for you Senator Bennet.. a voice of reason.

Thanks for saying McCain should choose Mitt Romney, you are correct! Keep telling him.
JDavis, Calif | 4:26 p.m. March 28, 2008
This is the only way I will vote for John McCain.
Lee | 4:39 p.m. March 28, 2008
McCain and Romney!!! Two powerful political figures who can take the White House in November. Go for it McCain!! Romney is your man!!
MattC | 4:40 p.m. March 28, 2008
Yeah, give us someone on the ticket worth voting for. Even if he is a VP.
Utah Republican | 4:52 p.m. March 28, 2008
It is the duty of all right thinking Utah people to vote for the Romney/McCain ticket. Ignore the fact that Mitt was in favor of the right to choose, and that other thing with people of the same sex. Ignore the fact that he flip flops around like a fish on dry land to get elected. Mitt is one of us. He looks like us, the thinks like us, he reads the same books, is the same religion, and dresses like us. So therefore Mitt deserves the support of every right thinker from Utah. Not only that, Mitt served bravely in the military, as did all of his sons, earning numerous war medals in their hazardous battles in Iowa. He is also a born hunter, as he told the NRA. Well, maybe not a hunter, but he did shoot an air rifle once. He's also rich. And as we all know, all rich people are righteous. Yes, Mitt is the one mighty and strong who will lead this country with McCain by his side. Thank you.

It is a sad commentary that Mitt Romney, Senator Bennett, and Governor Huntsman are more loyal to the Republican Party than they are to the Constitution of the United States.

Also, it is strangely ironic that so many accusations are being lodged alleging religious discrimination against Mitt Romney.

If Mitt Romney were indeed true to his espoused religion, he would boldly stand by our sacred divinely inspired Constitution of the United States and inalienable rights, which are basic tenets of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints.

Unfortunately, Mitt Romney ignores the Constitution, and never even mentions it.

Further, he openly proclaimed his embarrassment concerning his polygamous ancestry and was apologetic about controversial historic events involving our Church.

So, why should LDS voters owe him anything, or ever trust him with any elected office?

I really don't know who to vote for in this election, but it certainly won't be Obama, Clinton, or McCain, none of whom will ever deign to defend or promote the Constitution of the United States or inalienable rights, despite their having publicly sworn before God, a solemn sacred vow to do so.
Oliver in AZ | 7:14 p.m. March 28, 2008
I love how people are self-promoted Constitutional specialist, especially when it comes to spotting someone who doesn't support it. The Constitution is an incredibly complicated document because it isn't an absolute list of do's and don'ts.

My guess is the same people who believe our Constitution is so simple and black and white are the same people who believe that is it right to be given correct principles "to govern [ourselves] by." Yet they see no irony in the two attitudes.
Re: Oiliver in AZ | 7:35 p.m. March 28, 2008
Your comment made me laugh. I don't think the people who claim that no politician follows the Constitution actually know what the Constitution has in it.
Sandy | 7:36 p.m. March 28, 2008
I think having Romney on the ticket will make a good balance for McCain. Romney knows money, which is something we need right now to get our country back on track. I would have voted for Romney first if he had not stopped, so if he gets on the ticket for V.P. I will certainly vote for McCain. There appearances together even look like they would make a good team! Go for it McCain!!!!!!!
John Robert Mallernee | 8:26 p.m. March 28, 2008
Oliver, Et Alii:

Where in the World did you ever get the idea that the Constitution was "an incredibly complicated document"?

Perhaps, you're being sarcasticly humorous?

The Constitution of the United States is actually a very simple document, which any ordinary citizen can easily comprehend.

Have you studied our Constitution of the United States?

I have thoroughly studied it, have completed academic courses devoted to it, and frequently refer to my copy which I keep handy here in my room at the Ol' Soldiers' Home.

The document is very clear in its absolute prohibitions of federal involvement, and its strict reservation of authority to citizenry and states, even though those specific provisions are consistently ignored, due to the voting public's perpetual curse of ignorance and apathy.

Similarly, the scriptures of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints are quite clear regarding our duty to the Constitution of the United States.

There is no ambiguity or mystery in our Constitution, nor in the pertinent exhortations found within our scriptures.

So, since none of the Republican Party nor Democrat Party candidates will uphold our Constitution, who is there left for us to vote for in the Presidential election?

Am I the only one who thinks that Johnny Mac just plain HATES Mitt? He sure seemed to take particular delight in knifing him in the back at every opportunity when Mitt was still in the race.
My guess is that Mitt, being the true party faithful has consented to helping Johnny Mac pick the lock on Utahs campaign contributions cash box. Perhaps there is a slot in the McCain admin, but I doubt it's Veep.Treasury secretary maybe. I figure odds at at least 50/50 Johnnny selects his old pal Lindsay Graham of S. Carolina to fill the ticket, combining a south easterner with the westerner in order to draw in the critical southern vote. It'll be fun to see if the stodgy old white guy can beat the exciting charismatic black guy.
Come on. | 11:50 p.m. March 28, 2008
Anyone who supports Ron Paul should have the word "idiot" stamped on their forehead.

Seriously, it takes all of about 10 seconds of brainpower to figure out that Ron is 30 cards short of a full deck. Supporting his efforts puts you squarely in his card game.
Joe Moe | 11:59 p.m. March 28, 2008
I would love Romney as VP, but Born American is right. McCain will want someone to draw on the South. Romney's best shot is a cabinet post (should McCain win), and on with his presidential ambitions in subsequent elections. I hope I'm wrong, I'd love to see 4-8 years of McCain-Romney, then 8 of Romney.

If wishes were fishes....
Nevin Limburg | 12:24 a.m. March 29, 2008
I agree with Senator Bennett, not only because Mitt Romney is such a superb leader and family man, but because I have always respected the integrity and sound thinking of our good Senator from Utah. Bob Bennett does not do things for political expediency. He carefully analyses a situation, and he is very strong on core values that our nation needs in its leaders. I am certain that his advice to Senator McCain is considering what is best for the people of our great country, and for the strength of the United States of America. Let's give Americans the best choice ticket to combat the very liberal agenda of either Clinton or Obama. I choose greatness, and that means McCain-Romney.
liberal larry | 7:03 a.m. March 29, 2008
In my opinion Romney would be great choice for McCain, if you want Obama to win. His Mormonism would keep all the young earth, evangelicals home. He's not wacky enough to appeal to the flat earth, gun totting, far right, wing of the republican party, and the independants don't know what to think of this "born again" conservativism.
He had a shot at doing well by being himself, but this "Hillary like", win at any cost attitude, did him in.
JWK | 9:02 a.m. March 29, 2008
While I would like Romney on the ticket it is in McCain's best interest, as well as conservatives, for him to pick a solid conservative Black VP. JC Watts or ex Lt Gov Steele would be good fits. As far as the south goes, it might help but with Obama most likely getting the Dem nod, a conservative like Watts or Steele would help shore up Southern conservatives.

If he picks Florida's Gov he will lose because it will be too left leaning of a ticket. He could select Mississippi's Gov and he might be okay, but he would do better with the aforementioned candidates.
Sue Cole | 11:20 a.m. March 29, 2008
If Romney is NOT McCain's choice for VP, then I don't vote for McCain, period!!! Neither will I vote for either Democratic nominee. Being an independent, I'll vote for one of the low ranking independents running for office.
Levin | 11:26 a.m. March 29, 2008
1. One thing is for certain. The way to eliminate false prejudices toward Mormons IS NOT to perpetuate false prejudices toward Southerners or Evangelicals.

2. If Mormon Republicans oppose Romney as VP in response to supposed "backwards thinking" among other Republicans, that is at best a short term gain, and long term loss. Maybe it is a correct argument, but even if it helps McCain get into office, it works against Mormon-Evangelical relations.

3. There may be other reasons why Romney is not the best choice for VP, but let's give our Evangelical brothers and sisters some credit.

(Of course, it was Liberal Larry who came up with the counterargument, so maybe the conservatives are on board with this already.)
Anonymous | 12:10 p.m. March 29, 2008
Just goes to show how out of touch Bennett is, doesn't it!
EdwardL | 12:20 p.m. March 29, 2008
Double Kudos to you Mr Bennett a McCain Romney ticket is the only way to go. The democrats are also running on the minority and woman factor. Now we have Romney coming in as a Mormon just like Kennedy came in as a Catholic. The religion factor is now BY CONTRAST because while Mormonism may not be to the liking of evangelicals it is 2 fold for religous seperatists like Jeremiah Wright whom Obama is still supporting. Romney is presidential in his character and his experience. Hie knowledge and success in ecnomomic issues is just what the Republican party needs. Plus Romney is stronger then McCain when it comes to illegal immigration.
McCain - Romney 2008...bank it!!
Jeanne | 2:32 p.m. March 29, 2008
If the voters can overlook Obama's religious beliefs, they can surely accept Mitt Romney as a Morman. He is a true conservative and would make an excellent running mate for John McCain. So he changed his mind on the abortion issue to the correct side. Isn't that the goal?
Ed Raverick | 3:00 p.m. March 29, 2008
Please! Please! Please! Enough of the nonsense! Why in the world would McCain choose Romney and loose the whole southern vote? McCain's VP will be a young white, southern baptist, of relatively unknown evils, that believes and has believed all his life against abortion, gay rights and for smaller government, less taxes and no feeling for the poor, global warming or the "Blacks."
Mitt in 2012 | 5:03 p.m. March 29, 2008
Are you serious? Mitt Romney is the only chance Senator McCain has in winning this thing! Period!

If McCain doesn't choose Mitt - then he's a fool. Seriously, who would be a better choice?

One things for sure though, Mitt Romney has all the momentum to win it in 2012.
Fay | 6:44 p.m. March 29, 2008
I agree, Mitt Romney will make a good VP.
Brent | 6:48 p.m. March 29, 2008
I think Mitt would be a good running mate for McCain, and I say that as someone who didn't support Mitt for president to begin with.

Obviously,Mitt brings a wealth of business experience that could help McCain formulate good economic policies.

Mitt also has the advantage of being someone most conservatives can accept. But his conservative credentials don't make him controversial -- he's not a political lightweight like Dan Quayle, and he doesn't have character deficiencies like Spiro Agnew. He's the type of strong conservative leader who could actually help McCain.

Also, Romney's one major weakness -- past flip flops on numerous issues -- will be downplayed as the VEEP nominee as he will be backing up McCain's policy stances.

And don't worry about anti-Mormon bigotry in the South costing a McCain/Romney ticket. The South will vote for McCain anyway.
alice | 8:06 p.m. March 29, 2008
I agree with Bennett. the only reason my husband and I will vote for McCain is if Mitt Romney is in the ticket. McCain-Romney ticket will be unbeatable by any of those democrats.
H. Clinton cannot even distingush between a little girl's hug and a sniper attack. How could Hillary be commander in chief? Hillary could not even control her own husband, how could she control Al-Queda or the Jihadists? She has seriously lied on several other occasions: like Chelsea was jogging in the park on 9-11 and she has deep involvement in the Ireland peace talks. all what she did is to be a first lady, participating in a tea party.
Obama is a racist and an america-hating person. What is his business becoming the US president? His paltform is to unify, in total contradiction with his mentor pastor who is a separatist and divisive, an America-hater. How is "God Damn America" be misconstrued?. It is simple enough for a third grader or Obama's young daughters to undestand. For Obama to defend this pastor and his church's theology is beyond me. For anyone to vote for Obama or Hillary is beyond me. That is insanity. God help us.
A True Conservative | 8:07 p.m. March 29, 2008
Hey, John, I can forgive your past unholy alliances with Feingold, Kennedy and Lieberman if you have the good judgement to choose that future president of the United States, Mitt Romney, as your v.p. running mate. If you do not have the good judgement to choose Mitt, then all of your past alliances with the enemy will be remembered against you and you will not stand a chance in the upcoming election.
Cowhide | 8:28 p.m. March 29, 2008
I agree that a Romney/McCain ticket would be a great ticket, however I don't think McCain would choose Romney. Romney is more presidential than McCain and would overshadow McCain too much. I don't think McCain would stand for that.
The Press Lies | 10:20 p.m. March 29, 2008
The Press said that a majority of Americans would not vote for a mormon but a majority of Americans would vote for a black man who was RAISED MUSLIM and attends a church where the pastor openly gives ANTI-AMERICAN AND ANTI-WHITE PEOPLE tirades.

Either Americans are dumb as rocks or the media is far more than biased....it's TOTALLY DISHONEST.
totally awsome | 12:02 a.m. March 30, 2008
Hey...What about Dell Schnatz..i know he dropped out of the salt lake county mayors race...and I know he is big time involved in his run for govenor..but its likely he will pull out of that race too...so he will have some time on his hands and he wants to run for office..
lets all get behind super dell for vice president of the united states. I wonder if super dell has thought of this....Yo Super Dell...don't think small...don't think Utah...think US think VP of the whole flippin country...think what values and new vocabulary you could bring to Washington.
Super Dell for VP...hey...if all else fails..can't we write him in?
Birgit Olsen | 10:19 a.m. March 30, 2008
From the very beginning I have hoped McCain would choose Mitt Romney. In his campaign I found him to be the smartest, brightest, most presidential looking and also the best commentator of them all, and I actually cried when he left the race in February. He would actually be the very best should McCain pick him as V-P, old and "young", they would be a perfect couple, and in addition more people who have some doubt to vote for McCain would definitely be more convinced to vote for a McCain/Mitt Romney ticket(the 2 M/M), especially now with the fights going on between Hillary and Obama which are now making people in doubt to even vote for a democrat! What are you waiting for McCain? With such a ticket, I am sure we will win in November next.
Rex Nielson from Arizona | 10:54 a.m. March 31, 2008
It is amazing to me the rhetoric from the leftist field, both on the true left and the left within the Republican Party. McCain can probably win on his own. A dream team would truly be a McCain & Romney ticket. Stop the Rhetoric and hate comments and lets talk about electing two people who would compliment one another in a bid for the Presidency in time when our economy is about to implode, and a country that is at War. Friends we are at War! we need to support our soldiers and dedicate money, weapons, and diplomacy in winning this war, and bringing them home. I support McCain & Romney, because any other choice smells of corruption and inexperience, i'm talking about Clinton & Obama! Remember who were fightin here.
Shaun | 12:08 p.m. March 31, 2008
BENNETT'S RIGHT. CONSERVATIVES DON'T REALLY TRUST MCCAIN, BUT THEY'D HOLD THEIR NOSE AND VOTE FOR HIM IF ROMNEY WERE ON THE TICKET. (HAD HUCKABEE MORE GENERAL CONSERVATIVE APPEAL OUTSIDE OF BORN-AGAIN PROTESTANTS, HE MIGHT WORK, BUT HE DOESN'T SO HE WON'T.) OF COURSE, CONDOLEEZA OR COLLIN POWELL WOULD BE A POLITICALLY CORRECT TICKET, BUT WHO'D WANT TO BE SELECTED AS VP FOR THAT REASON? NOT CONDOLEEZA OR COLLIN POWELL- THEY ARE TOO SMART.
Sandy | 5:10 a.m. April 3, 2008
McCain/Romney would make the best ticket. Huckabee is still fighting McCain for the top spot. When he is giving up?? All of the people thats been mention we don't know well enough to know if they could be second in command. Maybe McCain knows them, but we don't. We know Romney. He came in second next to McCain in most of the primaries. He campaigned very well. We just don't know McCains best friends well enough in case they would have to take over the affairs of the country. Romney is a true supporter for McCain. I will be very disappointed if he chooses someone else. I voted for Romney and I will again and again and again. Wake up McCain, if you want to win this November!
