The U can have gymnastics. Leave football and basketball up to the Cougs though.

Ha, leave it to a cougar to not appreciate a sound drubbing. They have two good years and all the sudden they're top of the world. Last I checked, the Utes still are the only team from the MWC to crack the BCS or make the championship game in the NCAA tournament (or win a game, for that matter). When was the last time BYU had a #1 draft pick? Two in the same year? Right, that would be never. Get over it. Three years ago you were bottom of the heap. Now you're actually decent (though obviously not BCS quality yet...). I hate posts like this. Demeans every one. Get a life.

I was there last night with my family, and it was Awesome! The UTE women are outstanding gymnists! And all of the ladies, including the Cougar ladies, performed with real talent and professionalism. I also appreciated the good sportsmanship displayed by the athletes and the crowd - made it nicer being there in person.

It was the first Women's Gymnastics meet I've ever been to and I was totally blown away! The Red Rocks totally ROCK!! Ashley Postell should definately make the U.S.A. Women's Team for the Beijing Olympics. It would be a bummer if she didn't make it. Ashley, hands down, is the best female gymnist I've ever seen. All the girls on the Red Rocks team were brilliant! BYU did alright but U of U has one heck of a great program. Thanks to a really good friend of mine, I was able to see an awesome and really fun evening of beautiful women show off some outstanding talent. I also really liked Kristina Baskett, Nina Kim, and Daria Bijak showed serious strength and determination after that fall on the vault. Red Rocks, you girls make this state proud! Keep up the great work!!!!

More like minor man. Your comments show your complete ignorance of all things athletic. If you would like to discuss history, I'll take a national championship (Factual, not mythical) over an appearance in the fiesta bowl anyday. But BYU has one of those too, admittedly when the bowl was not as large as it is now. But at that time,I believe the Utes were wallowing in their 3 decade slump of loosing seasons, while BYU was on a twenty year run of Bowl games and championships. Let us not mention the incredible disparity in conference championships where equall competition between the schools is more accurately measured and BYU is decisivley ahead in Football, baseball, track, swimming and tennis, and competitive in basketball, which is where Utah really butter's its bread. A "couple of years"? Please.
I was at this meet last night and as a BYU fan, I wish to High Heaven that all BYU-Utah competitions were as civil and enjoyable as that meet. All fans who want to watch the Football or Basketball games ought to be required to see the gymanasts first, in order to understand the true nature of competetive rivalry and classic sportsmanship. Shame on You!

Cougs,

Don't pretend you don't care about this. Why are you reading the article if you don't care.
Mythical | 2:30 p.m. March 29, 2008
Whats more mythical then the football championship. The only sport you can go undefeated and not play for a championship. Surely a BYU fan should know this.
Everyone in gymnastics play by the same rules. After a season of scores that are averaged, the top get invited to the national competition to find out whom is best. Sure it is judged, but at least the judges are professional and not dorks in the media who lobby for their teams. Or some mythical computer systems that uses the media to determine rankings.

Yes, BYU's mythical 1984 national championship was more than mythical, it was a joke. Does anybody really remember it? I do, and it changed the way coaches and the media vote for the rankings. Nobody nationally would vote an undefeated team any less than #1 then. It just was an unwritten rule. And since BYU was undefeated then (due to a super weak schedule, including a 6-5-1 Michigan team in the bowl game), they got the vote that everybody was hesitant to give, but since the unwritten rule was in place (undefeated ==> national champion), it was done. I have always been a BYU fan then and now (but I am also a Utah fan now also), and I knew in my heart back in 1984 it was not deserved. Since then, coaches and the media changed the way they rank teams, all from this experience. Now, and from that, an undefeated team does not necessarily rank high in national polls.

Therefore, Utah's undefeated season and Fiesta Bowl win is far, far, more impressive than BYU's "mythical" (and voted for) so-called national champion.

Need I point out that Utah doesn't even have a mythical national championship?

The past is a fun place to live, especially when the present is a nightmare. Current state of Utah basketball: mediocre at best. Current state of Utah football: better (but by how much?). This year, Utah football could turn out to be a very unpleasant suprise.

But when all else fails: reminisce!
RE: lo | 3:51 p.m. March 29, 2008
far far more impressive? To you, for sure!

I like your logic though. Also 1984 = no BSC. Which is still a joke. Now we got losing teams playing for the "mythical BCS" national championship.

For college football history,we will take the #1 ranking. Thanks.

Back them, it was the AP and USA Today polls. Calling them wrong is calling all of the college football experts of the time wrong as well.

Thank you for proving my point. Did you bother to read the rest of the Post? The entire purpose was to point out that until I went to that meet last night, I thought there was nothing in the world stupider than a Ute and a Cougar in the same room. There are a thousand ways to look at these competitions, and as several have pointed out, Utah has scoreboard in Gymnastics. Good for them. BYU has scoreboard in football, (Like it or not, it is a fact, DEAL WITH IT), and basketball, and I would still rather attend the Gymnastics meet because people were civil, kind to one another, and supportive of the athletes of BOTH teams. My question is, if Utes are curteous amongst themselves, and Cougars are polite to other Cougars, and both can co-exist at something like a Gymanastic meet, then why must I be barraged with the constant displays of stupidity in the media and by people like minor man at the football and basketball games? Both sides are guilty.

AAH, yes, Lo You have something there. Just for one day could we have a little congratulation for all contestants and tell them thanks for their years of hard work (something I don't think the blogger understands) and sacrifice and pain. I don't think most of those who cry in these notes have ever enjoyed (Competitive) athletics. Chill a little on all sides!!
Minerman | 4:23 p.m. March 29, 2008
Re: Yes, lo....it's a good point. Had a bad day yesterday, and was too easily annoyed by stupid comment (that didn't even belong on here) from a fan (or anti-fan) who can't appreciate how great these girls are (for both teams). Good luck to both of teams! Always been a fan of Ashley.
Grow Up | 7:41 p.m. March 29, 2008
Wow. This article is about the Utah gymnastics team. If any of you immature football fanatics would just shut up for two minutes and let this hard working gymnastics team enjoy their victory, and celebrate a great season, it would be very much appreciated. Great job, Utes!!
Gymnastics Rock | 8:16 p.m. March 29, 2008
Just for some clarification Mythical, National gymnastics is not by invitation. The teams have to compete at one of 6 regionals where the two top scoring teams from each advance to nationals. So a team with the highest ranking seasonal score who has a bad night at regionals and comes in 3rd in their region will not be going to Nationals. Even though their regional score may be one of the top 12. The teams still have to compete to advance.

Thank you grow up for reminding everyone that this article was about gymanstics. I say Great job to the Utes and the Cougars
CTR | 8:30 p.m. March 29, 2008
It's so sad that the comments have to take away from an awesome night of gymnasticts. The Utes were a great night of entertainment and yes we'll take gymnastics over football any day. It is not a consolation prize like some think! To have won all the national titles and to be the only team that has made it to the championships every year thats quite an accomplishment. We love Ashley, and the rest of the seniors, but I can't wait to see Kristina get the 10's she deserves instead of just always setting up Ashley!!! Cant' Wait! Good luck at region and nationals. Go make us proud again!
